little help please

Hi, I'm new to all this PC stuff so hoping someone can help me out

I currently have two PC in my home and would like to connect them both to the internet but the problem is that I dont own a router and with things being a bit tight at the moment cant afford one.

The modem I have does have two slots in the back one Eithernet and one going to USB I have connected one PC to each and they are both detecting that they are connected to the modem, one works the other does not.

I'm guessing it's something to do with IP addresses is there anyway to fix it or am I going to have to save up for a router? :(
 
Obviously you must set the correct IP for each pc.Propably your modem uses a different IP for ethernet and USB connections(check the manual).Also if it's possible give more details about your configuration.
