Live Security Platnium Virus

Hey ya'll (I've got to say that now that I'm in the south),

I... well, my wife... has a little problem. She came to me and told me that her computer had a virus. When I looked at it, I immediately recognized that this was not a program I recognized (Live Security Platium). I looked it up on her laptop and found that it was some nasty malware.

So I rebooted into safe mode to run TDSSKiller (which found nothing). For some reason (and I don't remember why now) I rebooted and was going to run Malware Bytes.

The problem is, I can't get it into safe mode again. And I can't open up Malware Bytes, MSE, DOS, or the section in the properties that allows you to make safe mode a boot option.

Can anyone help me? I'm at my wits end. What the heck do I do????

Thanks for any help.

Okay all, here's the latest update. My wife went to the add/remove programs window and took the program out. I was then able to run Malwarebytes and removed some things.

But when I went to open MSE, it said that it wasn't running and the computer was at risk. So I try to start the service and get this dialog box that says, "Couldn't start the Security Essentials service. The specified service does not exist as an installed service. Error code 0x80070424"

I went to the services window in adminstrative tools, but I couldn't find it there.

So what can you tell me now? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

1.Open the program folder for Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (normally C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware or C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware)

2.Once there, open the Chameleon folder

3.Next, double-click on svchost.exe. This should result in a black DOS/command prompt window opening up.

4.Press any key to continue as it says in the window

5.Malwarebytes Chameleon will proceed to update Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, so ensure that you are connected to the internet if possible

6.Once the update completes and it says your database is updated, click on OK

7.Malwarebytes Chameleon will then terminate any threats running in memory, which may take a while, so please be patient

8.Upon completion, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware will open automatically and perform a Quick scan

9.Once the scan is complete, click on Show Results and remove any threats that are found by clicking Remove Selected

10.If prompted to restart your computer to complete the removal process, click Yes

11.After your computer restarts, open Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and perform one last Quick scan to verify that there are no remaining threats.

Hey John, I did what you suggested, no threats found (whew), but I still can't start MSE. Anyway you know to do that? Thanks.

Late breaking news... I uninstalled and reinstalled MSE - it works fine. But I never could get to the firewall, so I installed Comodo firewall. Hopefully this works.

Yeah, I was gonna recommend to just uninstall and reinstall. If you are still having any issues let me know. You still may not be infection free.

I appreciate the help. I still don't think I'm infection free because I can't access the Windows firewall. As I said, I installed Comodo firewall, so I'm not concerned about a firewall as much as I am about lingering infections. I've ran scans but have come up with nothing thus far.

I would try running hijack this and posting your log on here. Don't remove anything as some may be vital to windows just post your log here.

Latest update & Hijack This log

Okay, here's the deal. I ran MSE and found two problems (one being the Live Security Platinum virus), both removed, then I ran Malwarebytes, found two additional problems, both removed.

I still can't access the Windows firewall. Here's the Hijack This log (I hope someone can make some sense out of it, because it doesn't make a lick of sense to me):

(Thanks again)

Lets get a deeper scan ran.

Download and Run ComboFix
If you already have Combofix, please delete this copy and download it again as it's being updated regularly.
  • Download this file here :

    Combofix

  • When the page loads click on the blue combofix download link next to the BleepingComputer Mirror.
  • Save the file to your windows desktop. The combofix icon will look like this when it has downloaded to your desktop.

    cf-icon.jpg
  • We are almost ready to start ComboFix, but before we do so, we need to take some preventative measures so that there are no conflicts with other programs when running ComboFix. At this point you should do the following:

  • Close all open Windows including this one.
  • Close or disable all running Antivirus, Antispyware, and Firewall programs as they may interfere with the proper running of ComboFix. Instructions on disabling these type of programs can be found here.
Once these two steps have been completed, double-click on the ComboFix icon found on your desktop. Please note, that once you start ComboFix you should not click anywhere on the ComboFix window as it can cause the program to stall. In fact, when ComboFix is running, do not touch your computer at all. The scan could take a while, so please be patient.
  • Please click on I agree on the disclaimer window.
  • ComboFix will now install itself on to your computer. When it is done, a blue screen will appear as shown below.

    cf-preparing.jpg

  • ComboFix is now preparing to run. When it has finished ComboFix will automatically attempt to create a System Restore point so that if any problems occur while using the program you can restore back to your previous configuration. When ComboFix has finished creating the restore point, it will then backup your Windows Registry as shown in the image below.

    erunt.jpg

  • Once the Windows Registry has finished being backed up, ComboFix will attempt to detect if you have the Windows Recovery Console installed. If you already have it installed, you can skip to this section and continue reading. Otherwise you will see the following message as shown below:

    recovery-console-prompt.jpg

  • At the above message box, please click on the Yes button in order for ComboFix to continue. Please follow the steps and instructions given by ComboFix in order to finish the installation of the Recovery Console.
  • Please click on yes in the next window to continue scanning for malware.
  • ComboFix will now disconnect your computer from the Internet, so do not be surprised or concerned if you receive any warnings stating that you are no longer on the Internet. When ComboFix has finished it will automatically restore your Internet connection.
  • ComboFix will now start scanning your computer for known infections. This procedure can take some time, so please be patient.
  • While the program is scanning your computer, it will change your clock format, so do not be concerned when you see this happen. When ComboFix is finished it will restore your clock settings to their previous settings. You will also see the text in the ComboFix window being updated as it goes through the various stages of its scan. An example of this can be seen below.

    still-scanning-clockchanges.jpg

  • When ComboFix has finished running, you will see a screen stating that it is preparing the log report.
  • This can take a while, so please be patient. If you see your Windows desktop disappear, do not worry. This is normal and ComboFix will restore your desktop before it is finished. Eventually you will see a new screen that states the program is almost finished and telling you the programs log file, or report, will be located at C:\ComboFix.txt.
  • When ComboFix has finished, it will automatically close the program and change your clock back to its original format. It will then display the log file automatically for you.
  • Now you just click on the edit menu and click on select all, then click on the edit menu again and click on copy. Then come to the forum in your reply and right click on your mouse and click on paste.

In your next reply please post:
  • The ComboFix log
  • A fresh HiJackThis log
  • An update on how your computer is running

The Latest Update

Before I begin, allow me to personally thank you, John, for your help. I've gained a whole new respect and appreciation for you and the computer forum.

Okay, here's the deal. The firewall activated by itself and I could access it, so things seem to be good in that vein. I don't know if I did something wrong, because ComboFix didn't run like I was expecting it to. It didn't show a dialog box in reference to a recovery console and it rebooted the computer before it gave me a log. But I'm hoping that was okay.

Anyway, here's the info you requested - the ComboFix log and a fresh HiJackThis log:

Windows Defender

You have comodo internet security installed and you can't have more than antivirus program installed at any given time. Microsoft security essentials will interfere with comodo and vice versa. Spybot is old and outdated software and you don't need windows defender as its useless. Then go here to download the lastest version of java.

www.java.com

Also, was Norton360 installed at one point on this machine? I see remnants of nortons in your log. Please download and run the Norton removal tool

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

Last thing to do would be to do an online scan.

Please download and run the ESET Online Scanner
Disable any antivirus/security programs.
IMPORTANT! UN-check Remove found threats
Accept any security warnings from your browser.
Check Scan archives
Click Start
ESET will then download updates, install and then start scanning your system.
When the scan is done, push list of found threats
Click on Export to text file , and save the file to your desktop using a file name, such as ESETlog. Include the contents of this report in your next reply.
If no threats are found then it won't produce a log.

John,
Indeed, Norton's 360 was on the computer. I used the Norton removal tool, but apparently it didn't get it all (something I have to remove in the registry, maybe?). Since the problems with viruses (there was another issue after this one), I've ditched MSE and went with Charter Security Suite, which is free (provided by the ISP). So far so good, but I'm afraid I'm running into more memory issues from the program.

In the process of removing what you suggested. Thanks a bunch for your help.

John,

Here's the only thing that showed up with the ESET scan. Can you make anything out of it?

Thanks again.

Thats your system restore program. Once you turn off system restore and turn it back on, it will go be off your system.
