I read this article. The person doesn't live with antivirus (i.e. Norton) and claims it just slows down his computer, can causes crashes, and is even pretty useless as malware developers are always ahead of anti-virus developers. I do a lot of browsing and downloading, so I find anti-virus to be pretty useful, what about you guys?

I've gone without AV protection and I've never had a problem. My father is the opposite though.

Really depends on what websites you intend to visit such as xxx, torrents, or even google searches for some popular actress, etc, can lead to dangerous sites. However, if you play it safe, you should not need AV if you feel that it is that detrimental to your computers performance :good:

I use avast just in case, though I tell myself it's unnecessary because there's no way I could get a virus really :P If anyone was skilled enough to give me a virus not via the internet, then I'm screwed and any AV's attempts to stop them will ovo be futile

I use AVG and it has caught a few things over the years I only use it just in case I click on a link by mistake that has a virus or by getting a virus downloading files.

Why not use google search?

Because it can get you into trouble. Maybe a place you should not be.
I have grand kids. they know Google. Parental control is a must.
Might be porn or what ever. Might be infection, thats a good place to find it and to late. Yes .......i use it all the time.

Yeah I guess. But if you know what you're doing and exercise discretion then it's mostly fine.

I have malwarebytes and hijack this just in case. but no, I have no dedicated AV/firewall (I use a router firewill that's pretty decent)
