Loading earlier vesions of Anti-Virus?

Someone gave me a 2012 version of anti-Virus software to load on their laptop. Its one of those 3 packs where they used one and have 2 left. I thought they are only good for one year. I also thought after one year that you do not get updates for it as well. Am I correct? 1st time running into this.
 
If it hasn't been installed yet, you still get the one year license. To be honest, I wouldn't even bother with it. Just download and install the free version of Avast.
