ive got an asus eee 900 1gb 20gb and im installing windows 2000 i know 2000 coz i dont have a valid key for xp my question is do i have to maually install the wireless card adapter or can windows do it by itself

no it needs to manually be installed. Vista is the only OS to support wireless out of the box, and even then its support is poor, you nearly always need drivers for the manufacturer.

Its hard to find 2k drivers, try ones for XP / XP Sp1 if there are none specifically for windows 2000. I dont think ones for XP SP2 will work as they changed the way wireless is handled a lot under SP2

Windows 2000 has no interface for configuring wireless, so you will have to use the manufacturers own control panel

Im not sure if 2000 will even run on the eee. Be sure to integrate SP4 anyway.

Linux wireless support generally sucks but seeing as the eee was built to run linux, the drivers are probably available.
