Lock-ups; White/black lined screen

Hey, new setup:
AMD Athlon 3700+
ATI x1900GT
1g pqi turbo pc3200 ram
160 WD sata
52x32x52 Lite-on
ASUS A8N5X mobo

When I try to install windows, or if i leave the computer on for a while, the screen locks up with white/black or blue/black stripes. I can't get out of it, so to no avail i reset the comp and try again, but it happens over and over. I'm kind of typin fast, so plz say if you need a better description, im kinda busy right now.

I think it's the mobo or the vidcard, but i feel it is most appropriately posted here. Any help! thx all!

do you have another video card to swap out with this one? maybe borrow one from a friend, just to see if that's the culprit. also, what's your psu?

my friends all have apg, and btw, my psu is a coolermaster 500w with like 28A on the 12v.

I think it's teh card newayz, so ill be returning it for a replace within the week.. I'm kinda p.o.d tho, i spent 900buck on a new system (ive been savin 4 monthz) and now i have to wait another week...

well, I've determined it IS the card. My nan has a dell with a pcie16 that she uses onboard on. I tested it on that and bam, it didnt work. I'll be sending it back, luckily, that's one thing newegg is good for, returns/servvice. What can i expect, when a company buyz in bulk, they get more defectives! I'm still newegg 4 lif3!
