Locking

Ok well I was at my friends house and his mom had it set to where when it goes to the screen saver after 10 minutes of no use, you have to type in a password. I did the same with mine. But her computer had it to where you can't change that. You can't change it to not do that so my brother can just get on my computer if I walk away for 5 minutes and take that option off and go haywire in it. How do I do that? Thanks, Halofreak

P.S. I have xp and she has 98.

98? Wow thats old! Dont expect much security with that. My guess is that win 98 doesnt even support that. I dont know for sure b/c I havent used win98 in a long time.

You want your computer to lock when you walk away from it.
that's what you are asking right?

Best Regards,
Francisco

No i got that. When you go to properties -> screen saver then make it lock like that. Yea I got that its just my brother can turn it off whenever he wants because if i go pee he could turn it off. I want to lock that to where he can't. AND I HAVE XP. SHE HAS 98.

well just make his account a limited account so he can't change any system prefs..

Would that not work?

Just get a transcend flash drive. They come with software that if you unplug the flash drive it will lock your pc up until you plug it back in or if you over-ride it with a set password.

hahaha.... <BANG HEAD HERE> comes to mind, how many times have you had to explain it now, lol, i feel for you...

@ francisck - the OP is asking for a way to stop his brother jumping on his pc when he leaves the room for a short period of time and disables the password screensaver thingy. Specifically, he is asking how to restrict access to the display properites control panel where the screensaver would be disabled from.

Is that straightforward enough for you?

Oh and to asnwer the question, i have no idea, i would have assumed it did that already, but seemignly not...

Hey boss the easyest way is to set you computer up so that when it starts up before you enter windows it ask you for your password, now all you have to do is just click the log off button before you leave the room and or your computer. Got it?

hmm anyone besides me ever think the administrator account is still on this pc with a blank password? I have seen this happen many times people think its locked and someone comes along with administrator and a blank password and they are in i would reccomned you right click my computer go to manage click on users and groups and go to the user group and put a password on admin is its tehre or administrator if its there and then see if that helps any..

Yes, but that still wouldn't help since the password isn't put when the OS was installing. It's enough to press Ctrl+Alt+Del twice on the login screen and type in Administrator and log-in.
XP security sucks, there are hundreds of fast ways to hack an admin account.
Not telling any, by the way.

Right..... yes you can do that or do it via the screen saver.....

Because if you do it the log off way you have to wait for everything to load again.

Surely, though, even if you prevent your brother from turning off the screensaver password, there would be nothing to stop him coming in before the screensaver has activated. The most secure way would be to get into the habit of locking the computer before you leave it (Shortcut Windows Key + L).

Anyway, this regscript should remove the screensaver tab from the display properties completely, thus preventing anyone from changing the screensaver properties. Of course, anyone with sufficient knowledge can easily undo it:

Please run Notepad and paste the contents of the codebox into a new file. Please do not include the word Code:
Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispScrSavPage"=dword:00000001

Save the file to the desktop as killscreensaver.reg and make sure the Save as Type field says All Files. Then go to the desktop and double-click on killscreensaver.reg, and click Yes to merge it with the registry.

If you need to undo it to change your screensaver settings (you'd better put this one somewhere safe :)), the regscript is as follows:

Code:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
"NoDispScrSavPage"=dword:00000000

If you prefer, you can manually enter the info in the registry. To do so, click on Start -> Run. Type regedit and click OK. Navigate to the following key:
Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System

Change the NoDispScrSavPage entry to 1 to disable changing the screensaver or 0 to allow it.
