Lockup

I have a desktop that boots up fine. I am able to enter the internet via DSL using Explorer or Firefox etc. Once in, I can go to email and other internet sites. If I then close out the browser and end up back at my desktop, I am no longer able to open anything. I double click on explorer of firefox and I get the "hourglass" but nothing opens. The hourglass goes off. At that point, I go to the start menu and attempt to shutdown, but nothing happens. If I unplug the computer and start again, I can go through the same scenario again.

Is this something simple where I can change a card or something? If I have to take it to a tech., I will just buy another computer. But, I wanted to see if it was a simple fix or not.

Thanks,

Ken

do a virus scan, defrag your hard drive, clean out all your unused files, clean out the registry, and if none of this helps, try restoring windows. Other than that, have a tech look at it. There's no reason why you'd need a new computer, you could get a new one if you want, but at the worst, a format will bring your computer back good as new

your pc is I N F E C T E D , The virus scan yes, the defrag and reg clean are good to do, not while the pc is infected
sounds more like a BHO ( browser helper object or browser hijacker).
first go to the control panel , add remove programs, remove all programs like bonzi buddy, free cash, cash back, browser accelerators, shopping , weather bug.,,,, anything that you think was installed as a free program or not with your knowledge
go to spywareguide.com on the left under online tools , do the free spyware scan. Oh by the way before doing anything, turn off system restore. A lot of trojans and viruses run as services, you remove them and guess what, at the next reboot XP reinstalls them, thinking it was a lagit service. Googlr trend micro free scanner, they have a good online scanner remover, run it even if your program says no viruses found, it is not unusuall to run 2-3 programs to remove all viruses. Also google the cleaner by moosoft or moo soft. Great trojan remover , trial , full version that will work for 30 days. make sure as all scanners to update the Deffs before running.

do all that previously stated..

then if it does or doesn't find any virus and the problem still persists...

its probably just that the process is still running in the background so it wont allow u to start it up again until u end it.

for that, just press ctrl+alt+del on your keyboard and go to the "processess" tab and look for "ieexplorer" or "firefox" and end it.
