Long distance networking

Hey so I am helping a friend of a friend run some networking between his house and his shop. It's about 500ft apart. He has conduit underground so I could run a cable between the two, but I know for ethernet you don't really want to go beyond 200ft or so. I was looking into running some high dB gain antennas and go with wireless, but it's rather expensive. I could go that route, but at $150 per antenna I would rather not if I could avoid it. Any $0.02 would help :good:

Hey Motoxrdude,

I'm thinking you could run coaxial cable with two converters. From http://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=31276&seqNum=2:
Coaxial cable supports 10 to 100 Mbps and is relatively inexpensive, although it is more costly than UTP on a per-unit length. However, coaxial cable can be cheaper for a physical bus topology because less cable will be needed. Coaxial cable can be cabled over longer distances than twisted-pair cable. For example, Ethernet can run approximately 100 meters (328 feet) using twisted-pair cabling. Using coaxial cable increases this distance to 500m (1640.4 feet).

And these are only $65 apiece:

I think that would work... if you decide to go that route, you might make a new post titled "will this work?" to get more input... hope that helps!

Awesome, exactly what I was looking for :good:

Does anyone know anything about using fiber optic networking? Coax looks like it would work fine, but fiber is more appealing. Has anyone ever done it or knows how to exactly?

what is it to do you could set up a VPN? and just dial into the computer at the shop.

Nice grammer :good: Nah vpn isn't an option. A. He doesn't have any communication out there, ie. phone lines. and B. That wouldn't make any sense. Why would you want two ISPs?

So I take it no one has any ideas for running fiber?

The fiber itself isn't horribly expensive but the telecom guy we use to terminate it charges approx $200 per end...

Depending on what he is trying to do, I would try cat5 and expect a little reduction in speed or go to cat6 and as long as he is running 100mbit devices I don't think he would see any loss of speed.

I would also recommend using cable rated for underground if he plans to be there for a long time as conduits have an tendency to get wet. Also, unless it's heavily shielded, don't run it in a conduit with power cables.

Yeah the conduit is by itself, there's nothing else being ran. I'm just going to stick with what deanj20 recommended and run MoCa and call it good. I like the idea of being able to run coax because he wants tv out there as well, so it knocks out two birds. Thanks

Yeah so i went with deanj20 posted. I tested it out with a 1000ft spool of quad sheilded coax and it worked great. No latency, 100mpbs transfer rates. Now I just need to run about 600ft of coax underground between the house and the shop and i'm all set. Thanks again :good:
