Long Range USB N Wireless Network Adaptor

Help please.....Sorry for the long post but it is specific.
i have an laptop with an internal wireless card. I want to increase my range but there are so many options.
I would like to go with a usb connection if possible (i don't think i have a PCI slot)
I plan on using it only at home so potrabiltiy is not an issue. I am sharing internet (remote area=expensive satellite internet) with my nieghbor and he has the N router. It is at least 500ft away from my house and curently i only get one bar of signal if i put the laptop in the window.
How is the reception of the homemade antennas compared to the large manufactued antennas??? Is it worth the high cost of the manufactured units?
Or should i try and build a reflecting dish around a usb dongle???
I was looking at a Netgear (WN121T) which had good reviews on the store's site and the price is within the range of other usb dongles(~$50can). Does anyone know how this will work?
Are all of the N network usb dongles equal in terms of reception?? I assume that they are not equal based on price (~$20-$110can). Is dual band worth the extra cost (and why)?
So if i spend around $50 what should i do for better reception? Netgear WN121T or build around a $50 dongle?
Please recommend any product that you think is best.
Help please!!!

For your issue of 500ft. a new wireless card might not help. I know linksys makes some big ones that are usb, they have a big antenna that hooks into the port and should give you some more signal. From 500ft. away though the boost might not be worthwhile. You have to take in account all of the interferences that are already working against the connection (distance, walls, etc.).
