Long range Wi-Fi?

Long story short, I'm moving down the street from my parents house... (2 lots down actually, approx 250-300ft).

Is there a way I can transmit a signal that far?
I imagine so, but what would be required?
Cost is somewhat irrelevant, since it would be saving me ~60-70/month from having to pay for cable.

My parents own a Two story home, with a windows facing the one story building I am moving to. (If that makes an advantage).

Is this possible?

I know there's signal extenders, boosters, blah blah...
But what really works/doesn't?

Well, for me i have a 2 acre lot, and each house is 300FT apart, and i have wireless G, and i can get 30% internet connection and i use it sometimes lol(no wep).

But all you have to get a wireless N, cause they can go 800FT plus EASILY, im upgrading my router today in fact, so ill post back and tell you how it turns out.

Make sure you get a dualband N, it will be worth it.

Hey, i just got my router today, and that was a pain in the ass to install, every single one i have to install i can never get it to work/ set up properly, so with over 3 hours on the tech support line, i finally get it to work, i get a fantasic signal, i am 100 ft. from my router and i am getting very good, and great signal on vista, it averages at about 160mb/s with a maxium of 270 ive seen. The speed is good, i would not say that it is better than wired, but it it a big step from G, i can now play COD4 online, which is great, before, it would freeze every 2 minutes...

It totaled out at 130$, imo worth it.

Pretty good set up for me, im happy with it.

You could also look into an omnidirectional antenna, they broadcast there signal into one direction.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4629959&CatId=374 hook one of those bad boys to either your parents router or you PC, probably if I were you just buy that and an Ethernet bridge and hook it to the side of your building or from the inside above your head and I guarantee if you have a clear LoS you'll have a solid 54mbs connection so long as the beam is aimed right. Just be wear its very directional so don't stand in front of it any closer than like 1 meter or so, it won't fry your brains out but I would push your luck with a signal that focused. The beam is about a 33 degree spread as shown so theres a little room for sloppy mounting but not much. I saw a similar antenna beam a signal 1 kilometer. There's cheaper directional antennas that will do the job as well. Omnidirection antenna's pretty much waste the signal and just spit it everywhere rather weakly so avoid those.

I have seen 1 to maybe 5 wat 802.11g transmitters on the net. I have heard of someone taking one a tupperware small bowl w/ lid and I think linksys makes a device that you put at both ends of your cat5 cable. As you know only four wires are used in the cable, this device sends 12 volts in 2 of the unused wires, and the device at the oyher end takes the 12 volts back out.

so you can take say a 2wat 802.11g wireless unit put it in the bowl , make a small hole for the cta5 cable, put silicone sealer around the hole, then around the rim, pop the lid on, fasten to your chimney. I am sure that will reach your house...consider that the average wireless router is only 300mwats.
