Long startup time...

Im preparing to do my first reformat on this computer since I built it last November but a problem I have experienced sinde i first put it together was an insanely looooong startup time. Were talking close to 5-8 minutes whenever it is turned on. Bascially it goes like this:

MB splash screen (says M2N SLI blaa blaa) stays there for close to three minutes

Next is Vista Splash screen (somehow I turned off the normal one and have this really crappy green curtain effect here)

Finally the loading windows vista screen. All in all its very time consuming and annoying.

What can I do to fix this issue especially since Im entering into my first reformat? Any settings that I need to change or something?

AMD Athlon 64 FX-62 Dual Core
Asus M2N SLI Vista Ready MB
Vista Ultimate Sp1
Nvidia Geforce 8600 GX
500 Gig External HDD
80 Gig External HDD
120 Gig Internal HDD

Go into bios and disable everything you don't need/ make sure everything is correct. My external HD slows my boot time a bit. I would check out your main HD, could be failing. My computer starts loading windows in less than 2 seconds after turn on, all the POST and startup crap is a blur. I would definately suspect a HD issue.

yeah but its been that way since day one when the hard drive was brand new. If the HDD was failing wouldnt I have had some other problems since then?

Try resetting the cmos, then updating to the latest bios, that might help some of your problems. Also, your hdd could have been defective from day one if its actually that slow. Just to see something, download and run hd tune and see what kinda read/write speeds you have.
