Does anyone know when Microsoft is going to release their new OS? Also, do you all think the 64 bit sysem will make XP obsolete?!!!

Naturally a 64bit system will make a 32bit system obsolete, same way 16bit systems are obsolete. Longhorn's release date is 2006

No because there already is Windows XP 64-bit Edition. If only companies and Microsoft would make device driver installation and driver function work, and.....available for more hardware like sound cards and older video cards (may take a while).

Longhorn will be a killer on system resources. The top quality setting for the desktop nammed aero "glass" requires a 256Mb videocard with direct X 10 support!!! That is insane for just the desktop but it is suppost to look awsome. Longhorn will have the entire interface in 3D!!!

are you sure cuz i used longhorn and it s like xp excpet the whole thing is like gray and white.

I also used longhorn and i used it on the integrated 64Mb graphics on my mobo (really crappy) It had some cool effects but nothing too heavy, everything was smooth and if not better than XP.

I don't think they have added it to the beta yet, they are still working on direct x 10.

i've downloaded the longhorn beta, its not that amazing. Although some new features are cool.

Its a beta. All they have made so far is the basic code behind everything. They will be adding the new user interface later and i can't wait to see it.

They originally had it for mid to end 2005 or so [not sure about the exact details] but now they pushed it back to somewhere around 2006
There are new features such as a better indexing system but other than that its not a large change as compared to Windows XP which had everything changed from the original windows, the interface and everything. They've also been focusing alot on security too i've heard as more people are connected to the internet.
One question that i've been wondering is if it would be exactly the same as Windows XP with SP2 loaded. I guess we will just have to wait and find out ...

It will be very similar but not exactly the same. It will have the security center and personal firewall but file system and (as you said) interface will have completely changed. Yes it still has the cartoony fun look that windows XP has but it in no way could get misinterpreted as windows XP.

If you download WindowBlinds, they have a longhorn theme already included so you could try that. It looks similar to the iTunes metal thing interface but its black this time, which i prefer over white because they hurt your eyes when they clash with the background light from the monitor.

I'd rather go for XP Pro 64 Bit Edition. Longhorn is due to be released in the later part of 2006. I wouldn't put my money on that though, I mean, they were supposed to have released it in 2003 if I remeber correctly.
