I currently have sony vegas. I am looking for something more professional and something that will allow me to advance in my skills even more.
Any suggestions?

Which version of Vegas are you using? There's a pro version that should suffice, but it costs ~$500.

Also, what sort of features are you looking for?

I have Adobe Premier Elements, and it works for me. For more advanced video manipulation I used the trial of After Effects, and it worked well.

I've used Sony Vegas, Adobe Premier and Adobe After Effects. I echo akmozart's question about what you want to do. Video software can get very expensive.

I mostly use Vegas as I find it quicker for doing the straightforward stuff. Sometimes annoying trying to grab the corners of a clip or effect. If you want to use lots of very expensive and sophisticated plugins then Adobe is for you. Some plugins require a lot of CPU particularly if you are layering effects so don't forget that.

Improving your skills is not necessarily a function of software. Using a plugin to give an effect is not a creative skill, although having the experience to manipulate plugins to give a desired effect is handy.

If you look at non-cgi movies, most of the editing is quite straightforward and that is the skill that really counts. You don't have to spend a lot of money to make great movies. In the early days when I did not have access to After Effects, I would extract all the frames from a clip, batch process with an effect in a graphic editor (I used Photopaint with CorelScript) and reassemble into a clip with VirtualDub.

If you count the ability to use a variety of software among the skills you want to improve, then you need to work with them. May be cheaper to do some college courses where you don't have to buy the software.
