Looking for a hard drive

I personally use WD and Seagate drives (as well as Samsung, IBM, and Hatachi) in varing degrees, and to me a drive is a drive. Seagate has given me no troubles. The Toshiba died after 2 years use (well is dying. works as a 640GB flashkey for moving massfiles between new installs). Hatachi and WD have been serving me well for going on 3 and 5 years respectively. The IBM drive is likely as old as my Latitude Lappy, but it is still going strong.

Guess what I am saying is Get WD or Seagate for speed and price these days. Don't ouch a toshiba. Samsung is great, but a tad pricey. Hatachi is decent if it is all you can get.

Samsung is not pricey. When they were still making drives they were, for the size, slightly cheaper than Caviar Blue's but matched/outperformed Caviar Blacks. Now though, Samsung = Seagate, they are not producing hard drives any more because Seagate bought that arm of the business.

If I was buying a drive today, it would be WD, then Seagate. I would not touch Hitatchi drives, even if you gave me one.

As it is your main drive, I would take a Caviar Blue or Black as first choice, as John says, just pick a size and run with it. Provided it isn't a green drive, as your performance will take a huge hit, you will have a decent drive
