Looking for a Linux OS

ok, im formatting the hd with 98 on it right now, then i plan on putting it back in my pc and trying to boot ubuntu...right?

Ubuntu will reformat the disk with a different filesystem so doing it now is pointless. As of now i understand you're having trouble booting from the disk. You've downloaded the .iso file of the standard version. now you have to burn it. Nero is by far the best but it costs a bit. you can download isorecorder (free) and use it to burn the image to a CD. then just be sure your BIOS is set to boot from a CD before anything else.

well, ive got all that done, it on the disc, and the reading problem was my noobish mistake.... i didnt hook up my cd drive when i built it yesterday... but i dont have a cable to either.. i have only a sata cable slot left on my mobo, but im using my old cd drive and its ide, not sata... so what do i do?

if your HDDs are IDE then pop out the windows HDD and put the CD drive on that as master or slave. it doesnt matter.

But eventually you will need to get another IDE cable (if your motherboard supports dual IDE channels). If not then we have a bigger problem.

well, on the master and slave ide cable, it wont reach the hd and the cd drive, so what do i do? and it supports 2 ides and 2 satas...... but only has 1 ide slot and 2 sata slots, how can i extend one part of the cable?

ok, i did what you said and put the cd on the main drive, and it worked, but i checked the cd for an error on the menu, and it said it had 1 error... so do i download from another mirror now?

yeah, my hardware is fine, but i cant hook up both my cd rom and my hd at the same time.... the cable is too short, soo... i guess i just gotta buy a sata cd rom drive that way i can hook up both

well, i dled unbuntu from another mirror and booted it up... it only works on safe graphics mode... whats wrong, and why wont it work on normal?

that'd be because the liveCD doesnt have the drivers for your graphics card. go through the install process by clicking "install" on the desktop. then once you've got it up and running from the HDD you can work on your drivers for your card. what graphics card do you have? i may be able to help you with that.

i have the same problem but booting in safe mode doesnt do anything, i still get a fatal no screen found error and it brings me to a DOS'ish command prompt, which i think is the gnome terminal? do i need to install my drivers from there? what about installing onto my hdd?

well, i cant install it to my harddrive, because i can only hook up either the hd or the cd drive with my current set up.... the way the case is layed out, the cable can reach either the cd drive, or the hd, but not both, and the mobo only has one ide slot...... so i gotta buy a sata cd drive.....

edit: as for what graphics card i have, im only using onboard graphics... check my mobo up in a previous post.

^^ i was just getting ready to ask what video card...

If you have ati, have fun finding drivers. (that dont suck)

In the 4 days I've been using Linux (Ubuntu 7.04) I've had to reinstall 7 times due to driver problems.

Instead of reinstalling, all you probably need to do is edit your Xorg.

From the command line: sudo nano etc/X11/xorg.conf (case sensitive)

CTRL O saves and CTRL X exits.

STARTX will... start X

Of course it helps if you know what will need editing, I don't use ATI, so not sure what the default driver is.

The Envy script should install ATI drivers for you without any hassle. http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html (Will install for both NVidia and ATI)
