Looking for a new power supply

Hey all, recently the power supply for my desktop was fried. Thankfully it didn't hit the mother board. I know the specifications for my mother board, I just don't know what specifications the power supply must meet for it. I already know the amount of watts I need also.

How many watts do you think you need? What is the specs of your system but mainly what video card are you using?

Just make sure you pick a good brand. You can buy good brand power supply and know that you don't have to worry about it or can get a crappy power supply and take a chance that it will blow and take out the rest of your system. Don't go for the cheapest you can find, that would be a bad mistake on your part. Just trying to inform you. Good brands would be Corsair, EVGA, Seasonic, Silverstone, XFX.

Have had the best luck with Antecs. They may have to be ordered rather than going through a local retailer it but it's worth it.

Nah. I bought mine at Microcenter years ago which is a local computer store here.

Microcenter only seems to carry certain models. I used to buy them there years ago too which is where I started getting them. But now some models may have to be ordered.

Last year I did call in to Antec tech support (800) 222-6832 9 -4:30 Pacific )and they were very helpful as far as telling which ones were the newest being introduced (which I personally tend to stay away from, until 'proven') and telling about some info on economical vs higher grade lines, dependability, warranties, etc. units.

You'd probably get a return on your investment by upgrading at this point to an 80+ unit depending on usage.

I have an old 550w Antec Truepower 2.0 that still chugs along but the efficiency was an abysmal low 70's%. At a 100w 24/7 load, upping to 87% efficiency for gold would save you about 30w of juice.

If you paid $0.15/kwh that's about $35 per year you're spending keeping the old unit over a new one.
