Looking for a new router

Hey CF

I need a new router. I have around 1000DKK (~$180) to spend.
If you're a bro, you can look here: EDBPriser.dk

I currently have three routers, neither of which works 100% :)
Linksys WRT1900AC that shuts down once in a while.
Some crappy D-link that doesn't support WPA2.
Some danish rebrand (looks like D-link firmware, but TDC (danish ISP) package that doesn't want to see my internet (Don't have TDC anymore).

I don't need any features really. Like the WRT1900AC have all sorts of FTP this, built in VPN that etc. I just want rock-solid stability and good range.

I've been looking at these two:
TP-LINK Archer C7 AC1750: 749 DKK ($136)
Linksys WRT54GL EU: 419DKK ($76)

I've heard ASUS makes some really good routers too, but I haven't kept up with routers enough.

Any input appreciated.

I can't tell what the price is on this one, but it's the router John and I each have and they're really great performers.

Second recommendation would be this one:

And finally if you want to jump on the 802.11AC bandwagon, go with this one:

I would recommend the Asus AC-68U, it replaces the 66U and has been working great for me. You're going to get better range and performance from a unit with external antennas than internal antennas. For $180, you should be looking at 802.11ac.

ASUS RT-AC68U: $216
ASUS RT-N66U: $145
ASUS RT-N56U: $90

I'm looking for value for money here. Would you say the AC68U is worth $71 more? I want antennas I can point around in my apartment, so the N56U is out of the question :)

The AC68U gives you 802.11ac wireless, USB 3.0 ports, higher spec internals, and a few more bells and whistles. If you have 802.11ac devices and/or want to transfer large amounts of data over wireless, I would recommend going with the AC68U. If you only intend to surf the web, then the N66U would be fine. Also look into the AC66U, it's also 802.11ac but has slightly lower specs and USB 2.0 ports.

No matter which one you get, you can't point the antennas in a certain direction as they are omnidirectional antennas. The units with external antennas though will give you better range.

I plan to host an FTP, MC, CS 1.6 server and have option for many PCs gaming at the same time. Also mucho downloado - reinstall my PC once a week it seems :)
I guess it's a smart move to fork out a bit more now and have AC - even though I don't think I have any AC devices atm.
My walls are also a bit signal blocking.

Thanks for the help guys

802.11n has a maximum theoretical speed of 450Mbps using 5GHz and 40MHz bandwidth, whereas 802.11ac has a maximum theoretical speed of 1300Mbps using 5GHz and 80MHz. On my devices, I typically see around 600-900Mbps using my Asus AC68U. That unit will also allow you to create a NAS using an external USB drive, and since it's USB 3.0 you will get even faster transfer speeds.

You can always upgrade your devices with a USB 802.11ac wireless card (make sure it's USB 3.0 though), if you don't have any now. Personally, I would go that route if you plan to do a lot over wireless, which is what it sounds like.
