Im thinking about purchasing a new computer, but cant really think of a good set up, mainly because im not really into it and could use some help.

Searching for: High end computer with some raw power! But not looking for the (still) overpriced top of the bill if you know what im saying
Focus: Mainly high end games but also some basic stuff
Budget: Pretty high

Processor: Im thinking AMD here, but not sure. Any recommendations either AMD/Intel and also which type to get
3d Card: Im guessing radeon, and heck dont even know which type to get
Mother board: Im thinking ASUS, but need some help on this, and also which type
Memory: im thinking 2x1gig here, well yeh I know its an overkill, but I dont want to keep upgrading.
Cooler: ..

Any help would be great and very much appreciated

i would go with amd dual core for gaming or a high end single core amd for gaming and i would go with abit and if you want a good video card get the nvidia 6800gt or 7800gtx if you have alot of money and 1 gig should be more than enough

I don't know what your budget is like so where going to say like over 2kusd and just list the really good stuff

mobo:Abit fati1ly sli
cpu : athlon 64 (a good one like the 4000+ or if you have the money go for the fx)
video: either radon x800 or if you have a ton of money get 2 x 7800gtx with a abit sli mobo
memory: OZC or Corseair (none of the value select stuff based on you have a high budget)
cooler:Silent tower

thats only if you have a big budget ;)

Thanks for the replies so far, but still haven't made up my mind

How much do the athlon 4000+ and 4200+ differ (in other words: is the +/-140 dollar worth your money), and how do these processors compete with pentium (pricewise and quality-wise)?

i dont think its worth the money to get the 4200+, and the amd's are much better for gaming then intels are (my sempron 2800+ performs better at games then my P4 3Ghz did). And i would get 2x 1GB Corsair XMS Memory for $141 each.

So this will be the processor then:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ / 2.4 GHz processor (this is the one you mean right?)
I cant seem to find an accurate price, websites seem to state different prices, anyone knows the exact price nowadays?

Motherboard:
fatal1ty, but i think the AN8 is a taddy to expensive, so which fatal1ty to get which has good quality and reasonable price?

Ram:
OCZ Technology 2GB PC3200 DDR DIMM Dual Channel Performance Series Memory Kit
Thats what im thinking, 250 dollar seems reasonable for 2gb

Video:
The 7800gtx still a taddy to expensive (+/- 550 dollar), so im looking for a lesser card, but still obviously a very good one. So the 6800 or the radeon x800, which one would be a better choice?

i would go for a 6800GT, it really worth its monney. and if you only buy 1Gb instead of 2 (cuz unless you make yor pc a server. you wont need need 2Gb atm.)

Ok i might go for the 6800gt (was already thinking about that one)

But about the mother board:

Ok so im looking at the abit mobos and was thinking:
Abit Fatal1ty AN8
Abit AX8
With the AN8 being 100 dollars more expensive, which isnt really that great of a problem, but i was just wondering, is the 100 dollars worth your money in this case?

I personally would go with the athlon 64 x2 4200+. I dont know why people think single core so much better for gaming. Sure a athlon 4000+ might get a few more FPS proberly between 1-5. On the other hands on the things the athlon 64 x2 4200 wins in it acturally noticable. If you plan on leaving lots of programs open while you gaming the athlon 64 x2 4200 will allow you to do that. The athlon 64 x2 4200+ is definally worth the money in my eyes.

No the fatal1ty probly isn't worth the extra $100 if you don't want to. If you don't want to go the extra mile for the best then i would suggest the next one down. The Abit AN8 Ultra it's the some one i have, and i really like it. :)

Thanks for all the replies so far

Alright, so taking all of your comments in notice, ive came up with the following setup (not taking hard-drive into consideration, but will probably go for the maxtor 300gb 7200rpm), your opinions would be appreciated

Processor:
AMD Athlon 64 4000+ (2,4 GHz)

Motherboard:
ABIT Fatal1ty AN8

Memory:
DIMM 2 GB (Dual Channel Kit) (not sure which one, Corsair, Kingston, OCZ?, does it even matter?)

Video:
Asus Extreme Geforce N6800GT/2DT

(edit)
Harddisk:
Maxtor DiamondMax 250GB 7200rpm 16MB Cache

Cooler:
Thermaltake silent tower

Case:
???Focus: functionality (silent+good cooling), looks also., but functionality is top priority

Edit: Also Is it true that not all ddr memory work on every motherboard? So I guess this is also important

Any feedback/opinions on this set up, maybe things i should definately change?

budget: pretty high
thats a very subjective value. can we get that pinned to a number to work with

processor: im thinking AMD here, but not sure. any recommendations either AMD/Intel and also which type to get
definitely AMD, depending on the budget of course, but we can start with something like a AMD Athlon64 3800 Venice [ada3800daa4bp]

mother board: im thinking ASUS, but need some help on this, and also which type
good call for K7 and P4 boards but not such a brilliant choice for K8/k9 boards. a MSI K8n neo4 platinum is vastly superior

memory: im thinking 2x1gig here, well yeh i know its an overkill, but i dont want to keep upgrading.
2gb is probably overkill but that depends on the budget... as long as you have at least 1gb then you'll be ok

cooler:..
if you get the Venice you'll be ok

the 4000 is a single core processor, the 4200 a dualcore one

one is a dual-core...4200 is better for multitasking, 4000 for gaming.
arguable. overall the 4200 is a superior chip.

AMD Athlon 64 4000+ / 2.4 ghz processor (this is the one you mean right?)

1. make sure you get the sandiego variant with opn =ada4000daa5bn
2. price depends on where you buy obviously

the 7800gtx still a taddy to expensive (+/- 550 dollar), so im looking for a lesser card, but still obviously a very good one. so the 6800 or the radeon x800, which one would be a better choice?
consider the 7800gt?

i dont know why people think single core so much better for gaming
i'll refran from commenting...

dont forget to get a good PSU to power all this stuff. see PSU 101.
