Years ago I had Windows Movie Maker which let me stitch together separate videos to make a larger one. Is there a free equivalent movie editor app from the Android market (for smartphones) that can do this?

There are some out there. I know you probably haven't seen it, being in the US and all that, but the BBC's Click Program did an entire episode on creating Cinema quality movies using just smartphones, and they have posted the film Here. If you want to know what they used to achieve it, you should check their other page about it here.
Sorry I couldn't give you the actual names. My internet is so slow that I am bound to dial up speeds. Give those videos a watch and see what you can find from it. I can't remember how much if at all it cost, as it was a while back but it may point you in the right direction...
