Looking for an external drive for dad

Hi! I'm looking for a hard drive for my dad for Christmas. He keeps taking mine and I'd really like to get him one of his own. I was talking to him and I found out he would like to have one just for baking up music and movies.

I was lookin for a 160gb one. He's only got about 25gb of music and a lot of movies but he said 160gb would be more than enough. So far I've only found that western digital is a good brand and not too expencive. So I need a 160gb external drive, in a case, that is very reliable. I was hoping not to spend too much. I've seen 500 gb ones for as little as $90, so I was lookin in the $60 range? Moneys tight for me and I would still need some for my mom and sis. What would you reccomend?

Thanks,
N

The WD Passport model seen at the link here runs for $69.99 being the lowest priced 160gb sized model. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136229 that being a 2 1/2" notebook type model seen there.

One thing to consider by going with a larger capacity however is the eventual need for more drive space. Video files will tend to chew that space up real fast plus anything that may eventually be stored on the drive later. You simply have to get your dad a belated gift since the next best deal on a WD 3 1/2" drive size is seen on the 640gb model for $89.99 at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136295

Dang 640 for 90$?!? Criekey that's good. I mean, I'm not looking at just wd but I just heard good things about them.

I paid more for the 500gb model in use here. But that was also bought in a retail store at the time. Personally to replace/upgrade from the 500gb I would likely be looking at a 2tb model so I would "never" run out of drive space!

But like I was saying for a few bucks more and getting into a model seeing some extra drive space available leaves room for more stuff later. You have to remember that once your dad has his own drive he will using it constantly instead of borrowing yours meaning more drive space will be used without even realizing it!

Hahah 2tb dear god! I get what your sayin though it makes sense. 640 would be a good size. I'll keep lookin though.

At this time especially with all the holiday shopping right after the Black Friday specials you may end having to browse through a few other vendors like TigerDirect or mwave even to find a better deal on that or a 500gb model even down to a 320gb.

The idea however is trying to get one large enough to see some extra space and notice the expression your dad will have when you give it to him! :D

Have you any experience with this 640gb drive? Or have you heard or know anything about it? Is it fast? My father is not a very patient man haha. So why is it so inexpencive? their 160 is almost the same price

Actually the prices seen at this time are quite a bit lower since the vendors like newegg are clearing out end of year inventory marking prices down for the holidays on mostly the bigger ticket items planning to restock in eary 2009 again. This is why you running into low prices on items generally seeing a higher price.

The prices stay up on the smaller drives simply due to the overhead of keeping them instock while offering mark offs and rebates on other things. Originally those ran almost $200 for that size of drive also being reduced in price from having been available for some time now. It's a good time to grab a deal on something that would otherwise cost a bit more!

It looks like a good drive. I read the review on the white one And no one really had any complaints. I think I'll order it! Plus it has free 3 day shipping! My sister said she would go half too so i'll order it tomorrow. Unless any one else has had any major problems with it?

Thanks a bunch! You've really been great help!

I've always seen good results with WD internal drives and so far none with the 500gb drive bought earlier this year. The initial complaints heard when they were first out according to some was a heat factor from not being cooled adequately with any make or model. But those may have been off brands since the 500gb model here is room temperature and quiet at all times.
