Looking for glossy 23/24" monitor with good viewing angles, plus good gaming speed

Hello,

I recently bought a Gateway FHX2300 monitor. It is 23", 1920 x 1080 monitor and it seems OK, except that the bottom half of my screen is all washed out due to my preferred viewing angle! I couldn't be off more than 15/20 degrees from perpendicular.

I am looking for a glossy monitor (I strongly prefer it to matte) in the 23/24" size that has EXCELLENT viewing angles, where the colors will be constant throughout the whole monitor. I also require a fast response time for gaming, as I'm very sensitive to slow response!

I am coming from the 24" widescreen Sony CRT monitor (I believe it is the best CRT ever made), and I'm hoping I can find an LCD that I can be comfortable replacing it with!

Any monitors out there that fit this description? It's OK if it's more expensive, I'm happy to pay for a high quality monitor.

Have you considered Samsung monitors?

I own a Samsung 2253BW and it is wonderful...never once have I wished for another monitor. But...I was in the local computer store and they had a Samsung 24'' Touch of Color series monitor running for display...OMG! My wife and I stood there looking at it for about 5 minutes, absolutly amazing picture on that thing. I thought I have a nice one...that thing blows mine away.

They are a little more money than some other brands but the quality and picture is woth it. You may want to do a little research about this series and consider it.

Thanks for the suggestion, but given that is another TN panel, I am concerned about whether it would be any improvement with regards to the viewing angle.

One of the newegg reviews says:

"Like other people have said, the picture is a little washed out near the bottom. I really only notice it a little bit in the bottom left hand corner over by the vista tool bar. The viewing angle is also very small if you want to see very high quality. Basically right in front of it."

That is exactly the problem with this Gateway monitor that I am trying to avoid. I would like to get it right with the next one I try if possible.

The $500+ range is fine, I'm just wondering if this monitor exists?
 
I have an Acer 22" P224w and it's absolutely amazing. I bought it a few months ago and I still can't believe the image quality of it. I got it on sale for $140 on Newegg.com :)
 
Guess there aren't too many high end monitor users on this board?

Any PVA or IPS panel users here? If so, does it address the viewing angle problems of the TN panels you've seen?
 
Why use a viewing "angle" at all?

Set the monitor on something to raise it to viewing "level".

That will eliminate the need to tilt the monitor.
 
I am currently leaning towards the Samsung 245T at $659.

It has a PVA panel which should address the viewing angle problem. It seems that monitor manufacturers in general are very sketchy with how they quote response time, some using grey to grey, and others black to white... I am hoping 6ms GTG will be OK for gaming considering I am pretty sensitive to ghosting and motion anomalies and I like to push high FPS in games.

Does anyone know if the Samsung 245T has a glossy screen, or is it matte?

One other thing that I didn't mention that I would prefer in a monitor is LED backlighting. Are there any out there which offers a non tn panel, glossy screen, LED backlighting, and at least 6ms GTG speed?
 
Bodaggit23 - Yes I release this. I've tried different angles with this monitor, and actually regardless of the angle, the colors wash out in the bottom half of the screen.

Also, my preferred seating style is so that I am looking down at the monitor at a 20 degree or so angle. If I raised up the monitor, then I have to sit in a way that is not comfortable for me. I also prefer sitting close to the monitor, which increases the problem.

So thanks for the suggestion to raise the monitor (I actually tried it on some books) but then I have to look up at the monitor, and I like to look down at it! (it's how I've been using CRTs for 20+ years)
 
Ahh, ok. I just didn't want my post to get buried without at least trying it.

Bogus monitor if it won't give an even image.
 
I'm actually finding out that the Apple LED cinema can be used on a PC... My only concern about it is the quoted 14ms response time. I'm betting it's no different than the samsung quoting 6ms GTG. I wonder if this would be good enough for high end gaming?
 
Hello,

I ended up with the Apple LED Cinema on my PC. It is amazing, and awesome in every way!!!! It is exactly the monitor that I was looking and hoping to find. I see no competition whatsoever in the PC monitor market. The LED backlighting is unmatched.
