I am looking into buying Red Hat Linux or SUSE because I want to learn how to use these OS's. Is there any particular book or distributions that anybody can suggest that would help me out better? Thanks!

Dave

first i would start with fedora core. (its redhat without some of the more powerful abilities. this will let you know the open source code of linux.

plus you will then realize that you have to learn A LOT! to even get internet to work becasuse you have to know how to bind ip's to hardware adresses etc.

but the good news is its free
this is the link

If you are looking into Linux. You can purchase the book Red Hat Fedora Linux 2. It comes with the full version of Fedora Core 2. You can install the OS and learn as you read. Red Hat Fedora Core 5 is out and can be downloaded for free. The book includes Fedora Core 2, you can always upgrade for free.

This isn't the only existing linux operating systems , try mentioning
at least 3 or four other linux distro's ,as you favor redhat he might not!

start with using Ubuntu Linux (google it, it is free also), when you become familiar with it i would get Fedora Core or buy Redhat

Fantastic! Thanks for all the replies! The reason I was asking is because the book I was looking at was fedora 5 like you mentioned, which was $50, and I didn't know if that was ok. I did some research and I kept reading that SUSE was more stable but if you guys say to use fedora then I will download it tonight and start learning. Thanks again for all the replies! It's been a huge help.

I dont think you should start with Fedora
Ubuntu and SuSE are more suitable for starters..... google them

hi i have been using linux for close to a year now and i love it. i would personally recommend starting with ubuntu. It is simple and easy to use. it also has a terrific forum to help you with any of your problems. i would also recommend ubuntu because it is simple to install and the entire os can fit on a single CD, unlike fedora core and suse.

Here is a link to download ubuntu. http://www.ubuntu.com/download/ .
you then simply burn the iso image onto a cd.

Hmm so it seems to me that umbunto and suse will be the most stable for me to learn on? Well I'm downloading it while I'm at work and putting it on an old computer at home. Are there any books or anything that can teach me unbunto or suse as well?
