Looking to buy a video card...

So I built myself a computer a while ago, but installed my older Radeon 9600 video card, and I'm looking to now upgrade that now. My mobo is a Asus A8V Deluxe w/ 939. I have no clue what I'm doing when it comes to matching video cards w/ my mobo, and I have no idea what video cards are good these days. One that was suggested to me was a Nvidia 6600 or 6800... but as I search, I find that they are not quite as straight forward as that.

What suggestions do you guys have for a bit of a higher-end machine (2 gigs ram, AMD Athlon 3200+). I am looking on Newegg.com right now - so if there's a link to one on there you can point me to, please do!

I do fine with software - it's the hardware shopping I fear most :P

Thanks guys!
Adam

I would suggest something along the lines of a X850XT, Or X850XT PE, It shouldn't be too expensive now and it is AGP.

I've been reading up and the new Battlefield 2142 game seems to be crashing on a lot of Radeon video cards.... or so it seems. I know it crashes like mad on mine. So I'm hoping to lean toward nvidia or at least get feedback or opinions on that brand.

Huh? I'm just back from playing BF2142 not 40 seconds ago on my Radeon X1900XT.. and I pwned all.

lol...

So you haven't experienced any crashing or freezing issues whatsoever eh?

If you search on google for BF2142 crashes it's all over the place.

I'll bookmark that video card if you haven't had any issues with it in that game. That is my main concern so I'm glad you brought up that you've been doing ok with it.

What kind of video quality settings are you running in BF2142 with that card?

Thanks!

So will this card here not work at all?:

Or is it a pretty good one?

I don't see anything about AGP. Remind me what other formats there are that I should avoid. With my luck I'll get one that's not even compatible haha...

No you cannot use that card because your motherboard has and AGP slot for graphics acceleration. That card you link points to is for an PCI Express slot. I'm a bit behind on my graphics cards as of late but I believe the cards that spacedude89 pointed out would work well for you.

I also like the Nvidia 7800GS. It would be the best from Nvidia that fits in an AGP solution. Not sure how it stacks up against the two suggested by ATi though.

Yeah, the 7800GS series is just a bit out of my price range it looks like. I've gotta keep it under, or very close to $150.

Just trying to decide if I want to settle for ATI or Nvidia now....

Anyone know of any site with simple side-by-side benchmark comparison charts showing ATI vs Nvidia cards?

the 6800GT (or GS) will be able to run BF2142 about maxed out already tough.. since its the BF2 engine, with just some small modifications

The x850PRO/x850XT would be a perfect card for that price range.

So I got all my stuff installed yesterday and my computer runs like a CHAMP! Was playing HL2, CS Source, BF2, and BF2142 with all video and sound settings maxed out and it didn't skip a beat!

Thanks again you guys for all your help and advice!
