looking to buy laptop <$1K - any suggestions?

looking to buy a laptop - not very well versed in different models/brands/etc. would like to spend less than $1K. just for general use (office functions, internet, picture storage, etc etc.)

any help or suggestions appreciated. kinda going into this blindly - don't want to make an uniformed purchase.
