looking to get a laptop

i have been looking into getting a laptop, one that i can just grab and go. and to replace my desktop.

i am looking for one around $500-$600. i need to be able to run internet, photoshop CS3 extended, a few other programs (google sketch up, other photo editing software, etc). i would like it to be fast, i have really gotten used to the speed of my desktop. i want a good sound card, music is always coming from my computer. i am not a gamer, so i dont need anything for that.

with that, what all do i need to look for? is there a certain brand i should stay away from?

i would also like to put XP on it. is there anything special that needs to be done for that to happen( i know getting XP, already got it)

thanks to everyone that replies.

$500-600 is cutting it fairly close. You won't be getting a very fancy soundcard for that price. I mean the sound would probably be fine. As for the other things it could probably do them, just maybe not all at the same time. You'd be better off if you could spend maybe 800-900. Laptop hardware is a lot more expensive than desktop. I'd look around newegg.com. Avoid Acer, they have a reputation for cheap machines. Look for something with at least 2 gigs of ram 1.8ghz core2duo and some sort of integrated graphics. Happy shopping!

that is what i was thinking. the sound card should be fine with what comes in it. i kinda figured my selection would be low, when i was looking a year ago at computers, what i had wanted in a laptop was gonna be about $1200.

thanks, i just found out i can raise my price to about $700. dont know if that will help a whole lot. i have been looking at the sales on a few websites.

so, i need to get a new laptop this weekend. my desktop has crashed due to a virus. the max price has been raised to $700-$800. really need some good suggestions, and need it kinda fast. here is a list of what i want.

-need to be able to run photoshop cs3 extended.
-want it be fast
-reliable
-be able to put XP easily
-a halfway decent sound card.( im on my girlfriends laptop, and have my speakers connected to it, and the sound quality is horrible)
-not required, but would be nice, is be able to hook up my desktop moniter, and have a dual monitor( is this possible?)

sorry, i dont know a whole lot about what to look for in a computer.

would you be putting XP after purchasing the laptop or do you want XP to come with it already? it's hard to find laptops nowadays that come with XP already.

they're all good for your needs. :)

if you want my opinion, i'd get the last one you linked, the toshiba since i find them reliable. :)
