Hey guys, I will be starting school here shortly, but I am not really sure what I want to go into. Right now Im an electronics technician. I am going back to school, to open my job choices up a little more.
Well, the last time I went to school, I studied software engineering for a little while, then movied into network administration. I have narrowed down the fields that I want to study to network admin and programmer. If some of you guys are in any of these two fields, give me your input on how you like your job and what you do on a daily basis. Also how would they way up against each other as far as pay is concerned.
Thanks
Charles

Well, I work with 2 other IT Techs here, 1 is the Network Admin, and the other is a programmer. The programmer basically just sits at his computer all day just editing the program we use to run the business, while the Network Admin handles all the computer/network problems. The Network Admin comes into more contact with the people here, handles technical issues, and basically sees that everything is running efficiently. All the programmer does is deal with issues regarding the program. In my opinion, a Network Admin is better because you have more freedom in the work place, while the programmer just sits there, and fixes and adds things to the program. If your a people person, network admin, if you don't mind not talking to many people, programmer.

that depends where you work.. not all programers sit there and make chages to a company program. ie. if you work with a software development firm (like where i work) you will be working with many programers so you get to talk to them all the time to coordinate what you are working on because many people work on diffrent parts of the same project. (this is a small firm and we have about 25 programers and 2 network ppls)

Depends on the company. Dan's company is going to be different than mine. Here we only have 1 programmer and 1 net. admin. where his, he has 25 programmers, and 2 net. admins. It depends on where your working.

The median expected salary for a typical Programmer II in Nassau, NY is $59,652.

The median expected salary for a typical Network Administrator II in Nassau, NY is $55,067
