Looking to upgrade

I am looking into upgrading my current system and was wondering if you all had any suggestions. My current configuration is:

  • Via Motherboard
  • Celeron 1.1 Ghz Processor
  • 512MB SDRAM
  • 64 MB gForce MX400 Graphics card (AGP)
  • CD-RW Burner
  • DVD Burner 8x
I am hoping to just upgrade the motherboard, processor and RAM. I would like to use as much of my existing hardware as possible, including the video card. Is it feasable to do it for under $300? Any suggestions for a good combination and where to buy?
I usually look at NewEgg and TigerDirect. I have had good experiences with them in the past. Thanks everyone!!:)

do wanna go amd or intel? how much ram do u want?

his budget seems to be 300. gaming would be pretty difficult with this budget.

If you trying to make your computer better for gaming you really need a better video card to meet that goal. If you just tring to make it a better all around computer then here one option for under $300 that you can use your old agp video card.

AMD option
MSI K8N Neo2-F Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce3 Ultra ATX AMD $72

CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) $80

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ Venice 1GHz $139

TOTAL: $291

My biggest concerns are processor speed and RAM. I would like to have at least 1G of RAM if possible. I plan on using the computer for some design purposes (ie - Photoshop, Illustrator, and Dreamweaver) and some gaming. I ussually don't play anything that requires masses of power from the CPU or the RAM (occassionally Doom 3).

i completely agree with this choises. its good quality for reasonable prices.
and it will suit you perfectly :)

or you can go with a Sempron 2800+ for around $80. Save you some money and its still a great cpu.

agreed, i think that you should get rid of the celeron as well if you are going to use those sort of aplications

ok. That option seems like the best bet. Now that that is said and done, if I were to get a new video card, with the forementioned configuration upgrade, what card should I look into? I havent bought a card for a while (as you can probably tell) and I am curious.

Thanks.

you should get a pci e card that has the greatest amount of bandwith at the mo but agp is still not dead yet matter on what mobo you get normally all new amd or intel mobos have pci e look to get 256 and if you wanted to play games at a decent frame rate a geforce 6000 series is good for the money
