I have an older computer and have decided that upgrading slowly, thinking it may be a better (read cheaper and doesn't involve reinstalling a buttload of stuff) option than simply replacing it.
It is by no means a top of the line machine. Current specs: PC Chips K7SEM mainboard with Athlon XP 2000+ CPU, Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 (128 mb) video card, 1 gig ram (168 pin), 4 year old DVD rom and CD R/W (both work fine, probably last on the list), and 40 gig HD (10 gigs left).
As I said I am looking to upgrade, probably starting with the motherboard; which is why I am posting here.
I am looking for a MB/CPU/RAM bundle and am asking for suggestions on what to get. My preference is for 1 gig of RAM (too bad the ram I have is frikkin 168 pin, so I don't think I can use that with a newer board) and an Athlon 64 CPU (although Intel isn't out of the question). Personally, I would like to keep it below $400 (for the whole bundle) at this point and my plan is to do the upgrade myself.
So any advice (including throw the whole thing out, if you give some reasons) is appreciated.
