Lordy, I hate my burner.

My dvd burner appears to be on the fritz. Usually when I back-up one of my dvd's it backs them up at about 3000k per second. Its been a bit since I last backed anything up in bit and this last time I tried it it's backing things up at about 600 to 800k per second. I rolled back to a new starting point incase some little thing might have caused this yet it did not solve the problem. Just now I had a dvd in the drive it made this angry sounding spin down. Almost as if it was spinning and had to stop quickly. I wasn't using the dvd for anyting so I don't know why it would make such noises.

This is my dvd burner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

never heard of that brand before
I went through 2 dvd burners before I found out dvd burners are not like cd burners, there are two predominant chip sets. The pioneer chip set is the one you want. There is a lot of junk out there. NEC, PIONEER LaCie, LG, just to name a few, I have an LG GSA4167 and this is my latest burner works great, also does DL

It's a samsung brand in an emachines t6212. I've had this problem before and it just kind of fixed itself. And i just don't want to buy a new drive just to fix this little thing. What's the deal with this firmware I hear about?

firmware is microcode the device, what ever it may be boots itself with when power is applied. Whether it is a cellphone, router or dvd burner. Most pc based devices the firmware can be upgraded. I would suggest going to Samsung or whom ever makes your dvd and going to the support page , look for firmware upgrades. One note of caution, if you burn the wrong firmware for another model OR the firmware upgrade is interrupted ( power turned off) it more than likely will ruin the device. I would pull the dvd player from the pc and check it for a manufacturers name. Sometimes even though it is a Samsung it is made specially for some one that rebrands it with their name AND then the firmware upgrades would be obtained from the second party. Some of the e-machines are a real bitch to remove the dvd drive. You have to unhook the front and slide out the dvd with the cover assembly, and some aren't.
good luck.

thanks man for the input, appreciate it....dumb as it is I just went to samsung's page and downloaded a firmware for my computer (there was a list of about 20) and the first firmware I downloaded the drive worked but it could only burn dvds at 4x so I downloaded another version and its doing 12x now so yay for that.
