Lost 120Gb

I have a 200Gb HDD and recently got an indication from a program indicating that I was running low on space. Now I knew this could not be true so investigated further. Sure enough the C drive was showing 192Gb used. It should only be about 40Gb so I done a bit more digging. I narrowed it down to the C/Documents and Settings/Steve file(my profile). This is showing as taking up about 180Gb. The strange thing is that all the sub-folders and files only add up to about 40Gb as I had expected. There are no other sub-folders or files in the folder to account for taking up the missing 120Gb.
I am at a loss....has anyone any ideas?
TIA
Steve

First off, use SequoiaView to narrow down what files are taking up all the space, tis program displays the space on your computer in easy to see blocks so you can identify what is taking up the most space.

Then if you infact cannot find the folder it is in, it is probably in a Hidden folder, to see this:
  1. Select the Tools menu on the top bar of your window and click Folder Options.
  2. Select the View Tab.
  3. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Then you should be able to access the Hidden Folders

Are you using vista or xp? Because I know when i boot up like every week it cleans up my hardrive... Sometimes freeing up about 50gb of space... I dont know if thats my hdd, OS, or my mobo all i know is that it gappens :)

Hmmmmm, mine doesnt seem to do that, i used SequoiaView and managed to free up 100gb of space becuase it identified HUGE files i never even looked at any more.

Plus there is a Hibernate State file that, when you go into Hibernation mode, stores your computer's current state, that takes up 5 GB, small now yes but just wait till your clawing for space :)

Try Disk Cleanup and defrag too. disk cleanup gave my mom's computer 2GB! then gave it .5GB in defrag. Clear your old favorites, files, cookies, and history too.

Thanks for your amazingly quick responses guys. Being a newbie I did not know that some files were hidden. Having changed the setting to see them all I found four massive photoshop files accounting for the 120Gb. I've now deleted them and all is well.
Thanks again
Steve
