OK guys I have a comp. less than 2 years old and I just lost the bios, how? I have it on a battery back up, surge and AVR. Here are the specs.

Asus P5Q mobo
E8500
artic pro 7 cooler
running everything stock no O.C.
4gb ram
4870X2 Saphire
640 gb wd HD
Antec 900
OCZ gamextream 700
vista 64 home builders sp2

I just booted up set in the date and time and rebooted everything seems fine, just curious what happened. My daughter and her friend were on last night I check the sites they visited along with any new d/l and nothing. No new hardware or programs were installed in the last week. Any suggestions?

Thanks again for all the help

This sounds like you just need to replace the CMOS battery. This is the small, coin shaped 3v lithium battery on your motherboard. They do run down over time. Not a big deal.

Yeah I thought of that but it's not 2 years old they should last 5+ years I'd think. If it does it again, I'll replace. I believe it's a CR2032.

Yes, most are the CR2032.

It happens. Some do go early. If the problem keeps happening shortly after you replace it, then we can look into other causes. You may also want to test the current battery to see what the voltage is.

If I'm right, it doesn't matter if your computer has another source of power: if the CMOS dies, the bios is cleared. I agree that it's strange to see a battery go after 2 years, but there are always things in technology that do that: there are WDs that die in a couple months. You never know ;)

So I've turned off the computer a few times and rebooted yesterday and today and everything is fine. My daughter and her friend were on the net. I wonder if this had something to do with it. I did find 2 trojans on the comp. I have now deleted the files and everthing seems find. Dunno, just weird. Thanks again for the help...

BIOS viruses do exist, but I highly doubt that this is the case here. Usually they completely cripple the computer. You wouldn't be able to boot, period.

Glad to help, Compequip!

What antivirus program do you have? Did you make sure you deleted them and didn't just quarantine them?

I have avast for virus protection. I also d/l malwarebytes and this it what found the 2 trojan.verundo......
It always annoys me when my antivirus doesn't catch viruses until they're already downloaded. Then I freak for the following month and develop virus paranoia. :D
