Lots of nasty things keep coming back

Help! Heres the problem:

My laptop was running slow, so i installed HijackThis, CCleaner, Spybot, Adaware personal. Ran them all and found I had VX2, Lop, 180 Solutions, TIB Browser, CoolWebSearch and Mpgcom toolbar.

I've also got an unidentifiable toolbar which has the following tabs across the top: News, MP3, Gambling, Entertainment, Books, Computer, Education. In my Add/Remove programs area the only piece of software I can see worth deleting is The Best Offers but i dont know if thats related to the toolbar. Click on that and you get told you have to go to www.bestoffersnetworks.com/uninstall to get the uninstall.

Well I got rid of everything that Adaware identified (but not the toolbar), but as soon as I connected to the internet again, some of them reappeared having identified them again with Adaware. Simply launching the browser seems to bring back, LOP.

Anyway, here's the log of HijackThis and i hope this is enough information to get me some answers so that sanity can be restored again:(. Hope you can help.

Thanks

You got a few things going on. Let's deal with the nastiest first.

BEFORE BEGINNING, Please read completely through the instructions below and download the files from the links provided. You may want to save or print out these instructions for easier reference.

First, download Ewido Security Suite.

Next, download Lavasoft's Ad-Aware and the VX2 Cleaner Plug-in. Install Ad-Aware using the default options, then install vx2cleaner_inst.exe, taking all the defaults there as well.

Run Ad-Aware, update to the latest definitions, then click on Add-ons in the lefthand column. Select VX2 Cleaner V2.0 and click Run Tool. Click "OK", then, if something is found, click "Clean" as in the directions given. Click "Close", and exit Ad-Aware.

Reboot your PC and run Ad-Aware again. This time, click on the Start button in Ad-Aware, select "Perform smart system scan" and click Next. Once the scan finishes, click "Next" again. Select all objects found (right click anywhere in the list of found objects and click "Select All Objects"). Click "Next" one more time, then "OK" to confirm the removal.

You will be prompted to set Ad-Aware to run on reboot, click "OK". Exit Ad-Aware and restart your PC once again.

When Ad-Aware starts up, click on "Start", then "Next". Follow the steps above if anything is found, or click "Finish", then exit Ad-Aware.

For a final cleanup, please install and run Ewido.
  1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
  2. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
  4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
  5. Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
  6. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
  7. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Please finish up by rebooting your system once more, and posting a new HijackThis log.

Right .. I think I followed all that to the letter. I hope there's more to come because although some stuff seems to have gone away, things like LOP still appear in the Adaware log and the toolbar remains and I'm still wondering if I should get the uninstall download for 'the best offers' prog I told you about
.
Incidently, I have Spybot installed also which kept wanting to authorise a registry change along the way and I allowed it not knowing which way to jump on this.

Anyway, so far so good, and heres the latest HijackThis log:

Have you got Messenger Plus installed? That's where Lop comes from. Don't use the uninstaller, delete it from C:\Program Files.

Run Hijackthis and select "Do a system scan only", place a check by the following entries.

O16 - DPF: {24311111-1111-1121-1111-111191113457} - file://c:\eied_s7.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193457} - file://c:\ex.cab
O16 - DPF: {33331111-1111-1111-1111-611111193458} - file://c:\ex.cab
O21 - SSODL: SystemCheck2 - {54645654-2225-4455-44A1-9F4543D34545} - (no file)

Close all open windows and browsers, and hit "Fix Checked".

Then find and delete these files, if they exist.

c:\eied_s7.cab
c:\ex.cab

Then reboot and post a new Hijackthis log.

Another update and log

Yes, I'd heard Lop comes from Messenger Plus, but this PC hasn't had a sniff of Messenger Plus so i have no clue where its come from.

I did as you suggested and heres the new HijackThis log below. Before that i ran adaware again and lo and behold the LOP entry was there:

The Search bar remains as does the program The Best Offers

Heres the hijackThis log (note R1 .. this seems related to the search bar but i dont really understand if i should get rid of it or if it would come back again).

Thanks for all your help.

Might want to get a newer version: MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2600.0000) is old

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE <== waste of space

Let's get rid of Lop. I need to see something before we do all the steps.
Run Hijackthis and select "open misc tools section". From there, select "generate startuplist log". In the log, scroll down until you find Enumerating Task Scheduler jobs, and post what is in that section.

Ok, that's good.

Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
Click Start. Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.

Under the Hidden files and folders heading select "Show hidden files and folders".
Uncheck the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
Uncheck the "Hide file extensions for known file types" option.
Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.

Run Hijackthis and select "Do a system scan only", place a check by the following entries.

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.dvwtafwhehzurwwlbwppo.co...Te1vQHJtV6d.jsp
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F51ED54F-5157-2C0B-A0B2-78112200ED3B} - C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\APPLIC~1\SPAMJO~1\dupepeak.exe

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Browse download] C:\DOCUME~1\Mike\APPLIC~1\PROGRA~1\Software default admin.exe

Close all open windows and browsers, and hit "Fix Checked".

Then find and delete these folders\files.

c:\documents and settings\mike\localsettings\temp\wvigukkw.exe
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Mike\APPLICATION DATA\SPAMJO~1 <- This will be longer, but begin with SPAMJO.
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\onceloginterlogo
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Mike\APPLICATION DATA\PROGRA~1\Software default admin.exe <- Let me know the name of the folder.
C:\Program Files\The best offers

Then reboot and post a new Hijackthis log.

Half done, but before I delete the files mentioned, here's some feedback/questions to be on the safe side:

c:\documents and settings\mike\localsettings\temp\wvigukkw.exe
This file isnt there but there is another one called jztypmbr.exe

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Mike\APPLICATION DATA\SPAMJO~1 <- This will be longer, but begin with SPAMJO.
This is a folder and i'll delete it

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\onceloginterlogo
This is a folder containing several files, but I cant delete it because it says the file 1active.exe is being used by another program or person

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Mike\APPLICATION DATA\PROGRA~1\Software default admin.exe <- Let me know the name of the folder.
The folder is called ProgramKind and it contains this .exe and a load of others

C:\Program Files\The best offers
This doesn't exist, but there is a folder called ProgramKind which is empty

What should I do about each?

Thanks

c:\documents and settings\mike\localsettings\temp\wvigukkw.exe

Yes, get rid of it.

Try it in safemode, same for any others.

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Mike\APPLICATION DATA\PROGRA~1\Software default admin.exe <- Let me know the name of the folder.
The folder is called ProgramKind and it contains this .exe and a load of others
Delete the folder.

C:\Program Files\The best offers
This doesn't exist, but there is a folder called ProgramKind which is empty
Delete it.

Then reboot and post a new Hijackthis log.

OK, the files are deleted.

Btw, when i ran HijackThis again, i noticed the R1 and O4 [Browse download] settings have returned again.

Heres the log

The log looks clean now, are you getting any more problems?

As SFR suggested, get rid of this, it's useless.

O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Find Fast.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\FINDFAST.EXE

No need to see another log, just any problems you have.

It's looking good :) .. just some final questions hopefully:

1. In my Windows folder, there is a subfolder called 180Solutions containing just DAT and TXT files. Is this something thats been left behind after the clean up and can be deleted, or is it likely to cause a problem again?

2. In my Program uninstall section The Best Offers is still there and clicking on it still opens a window requesting you to download an uninstaller. Again, is this just a left over and how can i get rid of it?

3. In the Black and White list of Spybot under Allowed Registry Changes, there are 3 entries:

...\agent\mcupdate.exe
...all users\application data\onceloginterlogo\1active.exe
... \Search Bar=http://www. ...... .ze1vQHJtV6d.jsp

Is this something left over? Can i delete the entries from the list?

4. Finally, re Spybot, should i have Resident "SD Helper" and Resident "TeamTimer" boxes checked or unchecked. Also, it keeps throwing up questions that i never know whether to say yes of no to regarding registry changes, so can i turn this off or even uninstall Spybot now?

I think we're nearly there, just dont want to mess it up at the last minute!

Thanks again

1. Get rid of it.

2. Try downloading the uninstaller and get rid of it that way (hopefully).

3. Keep the first one, delete the others.

4. Keep Spybot and the features you mentioned, generally, if you're not installing something, no registry entries should be getting added, if you're unsure, google any info you have, or come back here to ask.

You are a genius:)

Thank you so much for all your help. The Best Offers uninstall software actually seemed to work and introduced no other nasties that i'm aware of.

It was a long and tortuous path but guys like you deserve all the praise u get for helping poor sods like me. Lets hope the nasties don't return:)

Thanks again
