Loud Modem!!!

After I successfully finished building my pc, I connected and installed my 56K external modem and I would like to know how I can turn the modem down, so that it doesn't screech and squeal as it's connecting. I managed to do this with my old pc which was running Win 98SE. Now i've got WinXP Home - SP2.

i think that if you go into the netwrok setting for the dial up connection (just double click on it) you will find a small check box in the bottom left corner of one of the tabs saying "enable modem speaker" - i think that may do it

it should be the command string...L1,L2, or L3. but its been so long since ive fiddled w/modems i couldn't tell you where to change this at. (L1 is lowest, L3 is highest) Seems like there was a L0- which would be no volume. paul...
