Low Budget Upgrade

Does this computer have a brand name or is it just a custom built? We need to know the motherboard in her computer to tell if those components will work, and LOL what she is using now was standard like 8 years ago, why so long to upgrade? The requirements for just Vista basic is 512 mb ram but for the higher versions Microsoft says 1gb, and these are just the numbers to provide passable performance. You should have checked the requirements for Vista before installing it. If that cpu and memory upgrade are possible then it will be night and day difference, and thats with upgrading to only mediocre components.

Good god! You put vista on that thing!? Did it even load windows?

What does she use it for? If just internet that gpu is overkill.
 
its a HP a6100y

came with vista preinstalled on it. it was cheap as hell though bought it like 2 years ago

she uses is for like internet msn and like old games sims 1 and stuff.
 
it was terrible trying to find out all the system specs, my personal computer is a high end i7 build to and waiting like 1min for My Computer to open seemed like forever. i dont know how she does all her work on there but i know that even these small things will give her a HUGE boost to her performance

With Intel GMA 950 VGA, I guess it is a 945GC chipset??

RAM - Run Up to 2 x 1GB DDR2 RAM, probably upto speed DDR2 677??

GPU - for $70, I would recommend 4670. If she just use it for internet, won't need upgrading

Looks good to me. You could actually even run quite a few games with that.



As for that alternative, there's a slight problem. OEM computer manufacturers like HP and Dell use OEM versions of windows. This basically means that the copy of windows is locked to the first motherboard it's installed on, so you can't change the motherboard without buying a new copy, which is around $100.
