Low FPS?

Hey,
I play CS:S a lot, and I play it on the following settings, 1400x900 fullscreen, with all settings maxed besides anti-aliasing which is at 2x. I'm getting about 80-90 fps average on most maps, but some maps i'm averaging about 50-60 fps. What could be causing this? Graphics card? Overheating throttling cpu? Ram bottleneck? How could I fix this without upgrading parts and losing a lot of ingame quality?

Those frames per second sound about right for your type of graphics card. I usually idle around 120 fps on most maps but of course go just under 100 on the heavier maps (although of course I have everything set to Max, including AA / AF etc). The reason some maps make you have less FPS is because they have more graphical components to load (e.g. Aztec has the rain, the water, other maps have more textured walls and so on)

Do you have HDR on? Im guessing not, but if you do then disabling it or settings it to Bloom will help increase performance.

And i've found that lowering some of the settings like shadow detail, doesnt make that much of a difference quality wise, but can increase performance.

60 FPS at the worst of times is still really playable though. Are you concerned because of performance degrading in game or just concerned because of the number is lower than you'd like?

That's roughly what I'm getting with my card at the same settings with the exception of the resolution..... Try to avoid decreasing AA any further as I personally think it affects your gameplay performance in CS; it's harder to shoot past jagged edges.........

HDR is on, it is set at max for everything, because that is the recommended setting for the system.

Mine just seems to be running really slow at some points, and it is skipping, like if someone else is running, it will skip sometimes.

That maybe because you and/or someone else has a bad connection and has a high ping of which is completely un-related to your graphics......... Also, check to see if your Vertical Sync is on. Vertical sync limits your fps to what your refresh rate is set at so it may explain why you may have a lower fps average or a limit to your fps...... If it's off and your fps are exceeding you refresh rate, you may have un-sightly distortion with your screen and graphics, hence, the need for vertical sync...........

When in game, run the command 'net_graph 3' in your console, then go back in game and you should find a little text meter in the bottom right hand corner of your screen. Make sure you aren't getting any choke on servers you join, as that would cause in game jerking / lag. Plus, turn Dynamic Range off, regardless of if it's recommended to be on. My system is recommended to have it on but I don't. It's quite useless and not helpful towards the performance of the game.

I would tend to agree that it's more the specific level that's causing the problems, or quite possibly another user. If you find it's certain maps regularly, than yeah, it's the maps.
