Low Performing High End PC...?

Alright guys, I was wondering if I could get some help on this issue as it hasn't been solved yet in the one year that I've had my system.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Windows Vista 32 bit
GeForce 8800GTX (2014mb aprox total mem)
Intel Core 2 6700 @2.66Ghz
4 Gigs Duo
DX10
-------------------------------------------------------------------
I also have the latest software and drivers, and I have even reformatted my computer and everything, but I have some serious FPS problems in games and horrible visual quality in videos and movies. Some examples of the FPS problems in games would be (With max settings and a 1680X1050 resolution):
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic: Average FPS of 30-45
Unreal Tournament 3: Average FPS of 30-40
Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion: Average FPS of 30-45
Crysis (High): 20-35
Crysis (Very High): 10-30

I run games like Half life 2 and Call of Duty 4 just fine on max settings, with an occasional dip during intense moments and 20 FPS during smoke screen filled moments.

With my hardware specs, I think I should get a lot out of my games. What can I do? Is this normal for my specs?

As for the game FPS, thats about right. Crysis and a few of those others will put your video card on its knees.

This is about normal for my 8800GTX? I've read from a lot of other forums that people with 8800GT and lower cards perform about relatively the same as my 8800GTX which is a lot better. I also read that PCs lower than mine can run Crysis on High smoothly, yet I can't get a decent framerate on it. Another thing. A 360 can even handle games better than my 3 grand computer. How is this?

Actually, the 8800GT are close, to the same performance. Because the 8800GT is newer, Crysis is a GPU hog.

Is that custom built? you could get some better performance by overclocking your CPU to about 3.2Ghz or so.

I get 35 fps on graphic intensive areas in Crysis with all Very high, except shaders on medium and no anti-aliasing. The shaders in Crysis almost make no difference to me but reduce your fps by 40% at least when you turn them up to high. Very high will do a 70% blow on your fps. As for the anti-aliasing, my 8800Gt hates using it on Crysis. To get the same frame rates at full anti-aliasing that I get with it off and everything else on very high, I have to turn everything down to medium-low. The anti-aliasing just is not worth it, don't bother.

are you running any anti-aliasing? because that can really kill performance. your oblivion and ut3 fps should be higher. oblivion though demanding is an older game and you should be getting 80-100 fps. i get about 75-90 in oblivion with my setup which is less than yours. try it at lower resolutions like 1440 x 900 and get rid of any anti aliasing and anisotropic filtering.

80-100 FPS? Damn. I'm capped at 60fps. How do you increase? I've tried to increase my refresh rate but my monitor's cap is at 60. Maybe a new monitor would do it. Anyway, Ethan, how much GPU memory do you have? I have 2gigs, and yet my games run way slower than yours. I have a friend that has a lower computer, runs UT3 at the same settings as me, and gets better results. How can this be? Even in WoW, in areas with more than 30 people, i drop down to 30-40 FPS until I look away, and when looking over the blocky World of Warcraft Terrain over mountains, my FPS drops to 45... IN WOW! :O You can't tell me this is normal for a system like mine, right?

no, something seems amiss. have you tried updating the drivers from nvidia's website?

as for my graphics card:
Display adapter type NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT
Total available graphics memory 1279 MB
Dedicated graphics memory 512 MB
Dedicated system memory 0 MB
Shared system memory 767 MB

far less than your 8800gtx, but my 8800gt is heavily overclocked. but i think you should be outperforming my system

My total Graphics Memory is : 2046
Dedicated Video Memory: 768
System Video Memory: 0
Shared System Memory: 1278

Something is definately amiss, but my problem is what is it? I've had this system for over a year and it's always been like this. Dell tech support doesn't help at all because they can only do things over the phone and can't physically come here. What can I DO to solve this problem?

Yeah I just updated all of them from the website. What can I do? Anything that I can do to check what's wrong, or if you could tell me, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Run 3Dmark06 and see what score you get, but what your getting is probably about right. In those few games, it may be a driver problem.

80-100 FPS? Damn. I'm capped at 60fps. How do you increase? I've tried to increase my refresh rate but my monitor's cap is at 60.

I think you have vertical sync on. Read up on it here.

The solution is to turn of vsync in games but it comes at a cost. When moving around quickly with your mouse you may see some "chopped off" frames, this is referred to as tearing. And as the human eye will not notice a difference between about 25 fps and anything over it you should be okay.

Oh I can definately see the difference between 25 and 60. The human eye cannot see above 60. 25 is damn low choppy XD and no, my V-sync is off. I tried it on and off and to no avail! And yeah, everything is capped at 60 no matter what I do, i run my settings, and it's probably my monitor. I just went to a friend's house today. He had the same OS, 2 gigs (1/2 mine), 1 gig GPU (1/2 mine), 2.66 duo core (same), and he can run UT3 smoothly, unlike me. My question is what can I do to actually troubleshoot my problem so I can get to the bottom of this? I also have the latest drivers, and so does he :/
