low quality icons in taskbar

all of a sudden my icons in my taskbar are low quality. like the edges arnt smooth any more. does anyone know how to fix this? oh and on my start menu.
 
Have you been trying out any 3rd party graphics tools or custom themes for the desktop? The registry values for the default Windows should look like these. You wiill first have to type regedit at the Run prompt and press enter to open up the editor for the system registry. From there open up the following registry hive.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop\WindowMetrics
"Shell Icon BPP"="16"
"Shell Icon Size"="32"
 
That's a simple display settings error there. Apparently when you set the screen resolution you set it to 16bit instead of 32bit at that time. It can happen easily if you are not paying close enough attention. But at least that's nothing to panic about. :confused: :eek: i goofed! Live and learn! :P
 
If you try out some of those free to try buy later themes and other stuff settings can get altered at times. If it is not from a slip when changing display settings it may also be a problem with the display software itself where a driver may have been..... ???
