Low Resource Anti-virus?

What's the best, low resource, free anti-virus program? Before, I was using avast! Anti-virus, but, since I just did a reformat, I've been looking into another anti-virus that might better suit my needs........

Another question, how critical IS having an anti-virus program? For a good year, I've yet to have a virus but is this because I've just become safer or is it because of the anti-virus program?

Which now brings up another question, should I save my resources and turn my anti-virus off and only use it when I suspect I have malware?

windows defender isnt an antivirus i think.

Im thinking about using Antivir.

I have AVG 7.5 and I think it's brilliant, takes no time at ALL to start up... and low on resources, I think 1,500K in total

IMO windows defender sux. Therre are a lot better ones out there.

I used to use Antivir. PCWorld rates it above Avast and AVG. I liked it and it used very little resources.

windows defender is an Anti-spyware not an anti virus....

i like AVG Free, its good, has updates every day, uses less resorces than any others i know, and its FREE

I was gonna recomend avg free as well. Incredible program in my opinion. realtime virus protection and regualr updates and the it doesn't take up much memory at all.
