m.2 for pci card or hard drive?

Hi. I have Lenovo ThinkCentre M800 SFF. I have an empty slot for M.2
I thought it is for hard drive( m.2 hard drives that are new technology and better faster newer then SSD) but on the manual (that came with my pc) it states that M.2 card slot is for installing a PCI adapter card.
So i am confused. I cannot put m2 hard drive there instead and it is only for PCI ? or is it compatible for both? I have not purchased HD yet.

I have attached a photo of the manual.

please advise, thank you

That pc will not support an M.2 SSD, SATA only. I'm not sure where you are pulling that image from. It looks like that is for wifi/bluetooth only.

There's multiple varieties of M.2 such as E key or M key. Some of them simply support add-on cards like wireless NIC but wouldn't support storage.

If you check out the spec sheet there's a few different wireless NICs listed, so I can only assume that's what it would generally be for.
Ok I see

Slot 4: Low Profile, optional 32-bit PCI 2.3 (via M.2 to PCI adaptor)

I just want to clarify (because I’m not an expert) that if it states it’s for PCI adaptor, it means it’s ONLY for that and SSD can’t be used. Correct?
