M2N-SLI CPU Upgrade HELP PLEASE

Hey all, first post here but I'm in need of help. I have an Asus M2N-SLI (not deluxe), with an Athlon X2 6000+ processor. According to http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2NSLI/#CPUS I am capable of a Phenom IIX4 945. So, I have the 945 in hand, and I even updated my bios to 1103 according to their site and my PC won't boot. I installed my 6000+ and it boots fine. I even went ahead and updated an earlier bios (5001) to see if that did it, and no.

The part number that is on the 945 box is: hdx945wfgmbox; however the part number on ASUS site is hdx945wfk4dgm. I read sirsaechao's post regarding his M2N-SLI Deluxe and the 945, I'm just not sure which part number he went with.

My problem is when I type in hdx945wfgmbox to Tigerdirect (where I ordered from), my 945 shows up. But when I type in hdx945wfk4dgm nothing comes up, as if hdx945wfgmbox is the only one purchaseable. Same with Newegg. Where am I going wrong here?? Please help, and thank you!

By the way, I called ASUS and they said the 945 isn't compatible because of the BOX part number. Is this truly the case?

Check your bios revision to make sure you are running 5001. Thats the only bios that supports that cpu.

Then its most likely the board doesn't support that particular boxed number. Maybe there were different revisions of that processor, not sure. You would have to upgrade to an am3 motherboard in order to use that processor.

Thanks. By the way, the user I mentioned in the first post, I checked his MB and his supports the same 945 as mine. I just wonder which part number he received...

That seems to be the only explanation...one quick question if you don't mind. Would I be more future proof if I went with AM3+, or am I even able to do that?

Yeah. You would have to reinstall windows. Do you have an OEM version of windows or a retail version?

I'm just so torn as to why this processor won't work?! If you look at this site http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/K10/AMD-Phenom II X4 945 - HDX945WFK4DGM (HDX945WFGMBOX).html you see that the different part numbers (the top one is on my CPU support list http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/AMD_AM2/M2NSLI/#CPUS ) represent OEM and boxed. From what I've read is that OEM and boxed are the exact same except OEM are usually without heatsink and fan for professional installations

ASUS says my 945 is incompatible due to the part number, but the part numbers just differentiate boxed and OEM. I will be giving AMD a call tomorrow, but if anybody has any insight please chime in. Thanks.

They are the same processor. The only difference is, no box and fan plus no 3 year warranty. Most of the time the OEMs since they were really meant for a OEM pre built system with lowerend motherboards would default to a slightly lower voltage then the retail box version.

I know you have updated the bios, but have you reset the CMOS/BIOS by the jumper or removing the battery for a few minutes. Off and unplugged.

You know what i did that with 1103 and only for a few seconds. Ill do it tomorrow for a few minutes on the 5001 revision and report back. Thanks.

Nothing with clearing the CMOS. I'm going to give AMD a call tomorrow, if they say it should work then I may have to RMA this thing. If that doesn't work, I will either have to eat this $100 or purchase a new M/B, ram, and OS. May as well uprade my GPU while I'm in there. Thanks for all the help.

AMD is RMA'ing it. Both AMD and ASUS say it's compatible, I tried both BIOS revisions and nothing. It has to be the processor. I'll try and keep you all posted.

Cool that AMD is replacing it. But if you have had it less then 30 days you could probable get one back faster from Newegg.

Yeah I was on the phone with AMD and wondering that same thing (only Tigerdirect), but then they said they're paying for all shipping so I said why not. I believe this particular CPU sat on a shelf for a long time. I hope the next one works perfectly.
