MAC addresses

Does anyone know of a way that I can make multiple computers on the same network have identical mac adresses. If you cannot do this, why?

Actually, it's not really possible and shouldn't ever happen... Mac addresses are suppose to be totally random. They are also hardcoded into the NIC and can't be changed.

Now, as the network might work this way, I seriously doubt you'll actually find two cards with the same MAC address... Unless maybe you got them from some really cheap company or something :P

I suppose it's possible to emulate another MAC, but I know the number is hard-coded onto the card. I mean, I had an older card that actually had the code printed on the PCB itself!

OK, good. Emulating the MAC address should suffice. However, my friend told me that it is not possible to have two machines with the same MAC address on the same network. Hellbreather seems to think otherwise. Hellbreather, can you please elaborate on how to do this and why it is not recommended. Thanks for your help, guys!

If I'm not mistaking, it's like having two IP address's, or two of anything... They will just conflict. Now, you could probably have them on different IP ranges, but that wouldn't totally, technically, be on the same network...

Maybe it would help if I explain what I am trying to accomplish. I have a program that I paid good money for that has a license server which uses your mac address. I want to be able to use the program on two computers at the same time. One thing I can do is plug machine A into the network, load the program, unplug from the network, change the MAC address, plug machine A back into the network again, then set the MAC address in machine B and load the program on machine B. As you can see, this would be a major pain in the butt. I am looking for a better way of doing this.

Buy another license my friend. If you want to use it on more than one machine, you need to get the appropriate license(s). We can't help you in a situation where you want to spread software over multiple computers while only obtaining a single license good for one machine. They designed it to be MAC specific to stop people who are doing exactly what you want to do.

it is indeed possible to use a application to mask your mac id, but given that you are using it for illegal purpoeses i couldn;t sleep at night knowing i'd helped you break the law
