Mac G4 CD drive help

It's not opening, not responding to commands from the computer.

I believe it needs to be replaced. My mom has a Mac G4 that runs OS9 and OSX as well. Would I be able to buy a CD/DVD drive that can also BURN CDs and simply unscrew and unhook the old one and plug and screw the new one it? If so what kind of drive would be compatible? Please help me out, thanks.

If you are running OS X 10.4 or newer most DVDRW drives will work from a retail store. However, just to let you know Apple typically uses either Sony or Pioneer drives, so those may work better.

Yeah I think we recently updated to 10.4, that's the most my mom's mac can go it's outdated after that. Okay so I'll ask at the store then. Thanks.

I have had good luck with the pioneer drives. You can check out a site called www.xlr8yourmac.com and it will have a huge list of third party devices and reviews by consumers on how well it works.
