suggestions as to which to choose, and other suggestions?

Easy to setup, USB port for printers or network storage, dual-band N. What more could you want?

Go with the Airport Extreme. Or go with the Time Capsule. It's an Airport Extreme except with a 1 or 2TB hard drive built iin.

Is it a reliable connection, and will it run with the ps3?

Wondering if the time machine is necessary, wanting to get an external harddrive and connect it to the firewire 800

Depends on what you want to do, I think. The apple one it probably better quality overall, but D-link tends to have awesome features when it comes to gaming.

I don't know what that model has, but my DGL-4500 does an amazing job of handling bandwidth and latency in a house full of 6 computers (3 of which are gamers) and 3 game consoles, even when all are on and running either games or fricking torrent programs. It's VERY well optimized for gaming.

I don't like Apple Networking hardware and I think D-Link products are very cheaply and poorly made. I would recommend you find a router that is on the broadcom hardware list (linksys, and some others) and then find a model that supports DD-WRT firmware and go with that.

I have been using my WRT54GL with DD-WRT for about 4 years now and it is awesome. No complaints, I get over 2MB (that is megabyte) downloads, wireless has strong signal, and I have special features for Xbox Live, puts my PS3 in DMZ, can set up multiple VLANs, over clocking features (I don't use those), and it has never locked up or bricked. I also have support for mounting SMB shares through my router as well if I want to file share off site from my home.
