Hey guys,

I'm buying my girlfriend a laptop for christmas because i know her mother can't afford it and she sure can't afford it herself. I have quite a bit of money saved and really want to get her a quality laptop. I have a macbook myself and have had it for 3 years with no problem. But, I'm not a believer that they are the only good machines on earth. Let me know what you would do or any other suggestions. I have never owned a vaio but have always been a fan for some reason. Thanks in advance for your reply

I have owned a Macbook (2006, 1.83Ghz Core Duo) and now have a Macbook Pro 13" (2.53Ghz Core 2 Duo). I would recommend a Mac if you can afford it due to their build quality--the trackpads of both the current Macbook and Macbook Pro far surpass any I have ever used on a Windows laptop. They are world's apart!

I don't know why but I am leaning towards the vaio. It might be the savings in money or just the fact that I'm curious to compare Sony's laptop with windows 7 to my mac with leopard.

The VAIO, as an ultraportable machine with long battery life, is impressive. Plus the connection options, especially the built-in Sprint connection, are great. The integrated DVD drive is a plus, too. Also, if you’ve ever seen the Sony in person (or if you own one), you know how tiny it is. That can be a good or bad thing depending on what you’re looking for. If you’ve got huge fingers, it’s not so good.

The MacBook Air, on the other hand, will be an impressively portable, basically-full-size computer. It won’t feel small and tiny like the VAIO but it likely won’t weigh you down much either. Plus, most of the stuff I’ve read from the VAIO’s users has been that the VAIO TZ series is slow and underpowered. The MacBook has it pretty well beaten in the speed department.

Of course, the ultimate decision is up to you
hopefully this has helped a bit.

Thanks alot, that did help. Right now, the money savings is the biggest thing. I've read a lot about both computers and it seems that the vaio is dependable. I'm thinking of going with the FW series with 4gb ram and the core 2 duo processor t6600-2.2 ghz. thats 300 cheaper than the macbook, and it seems worth it to me. I'm very interested to hear more of yours and others thoughts/ comments.

My mother has a Macbook from work and I would not suggest getting one after her experience. Within a year it has required a two new motherboards and the battery has completely died and will not charge. It was brand new before she got it and was used pretty lightly (a couple hours every other day).

I've not had much hands-on experience with Sony's, but they do seem to make pretty high-quality PCs and people tends to speak highly of them. While they wouldn't be one of my first choices, they would certainly be a brand I'd look into.

Is she used to windows or Mac? Choose whichever one she's comfortable with. If she doesn't know either, it's pretty much your choice. Both Sony and Apple make quality laptops, though I lean towards Sony myself, but I'm not exactly a mac fan. I never noticed a trackpad difference when my parents had their macbook. Yeah theres two finger scroll, but my asus EEE does the same thing. Otherwise, I hate how you can't just tap to click.

Hi I think that getting a macbook is a good idea as you have got one and know what to expect from them but I believe that they are some what limited with software and peripherals than windows machines. I am not saying this because I don't like them because I do (I have a macbook, imac and two emac's). It depends what she wants It for as an apple mac is more useful for designing and creative things and windows is good for office stuff like word processing and productivity.

Now Sony Vaio computers are more of a fashion statement and a show that you have money. you can get another laptop with the same specifications for alot less but then it becomes another laptop. With a Vaio, you can look like you have the best laptop even if you buy the cheapest one. Using Amazon I have picked two laptops with a similar spec:

The Sony VAIO NS30E/S has a 15.4" widescreen, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, DVD-RW, 2 GHz Dual Core Pentium processor and Windows Vista Home Premium.

The Acer Aspire 5536 has a 15.6" widescreen, 3GB RAM, 500GB HDD, DVD-RW, 2.1 GHz AMD Athlon X2 QL-64 (which is basically AMD's version of a dual Core 2.1 GHz) and Windows Vista Home Premium.

Both are eligible for a free upgrade to windows 7.

The Prices: Sony Vaio £439.99 ---- Acer Aspire £379.99

Sony have nice designs,
Acer have high spec laptops for low prices but didn't used to be a good make,
Toshiba are o.k but sometimes they look basic and have too much plastic,
Dell laptops are reasonable until they break and you need support from them,
Samsung laptops are expensive and not always high spec,
Apple Mac computers are expensive for an operating system that does pretty much the same as linux.

So at the moment I would ether get the Acer if you think she would like the specifications on it or the Sony if she would like the designer looks of it.

Hope this helps *
