Macbook Pro Running Slow

I recently bought a Macbook Pro 13in. it's the one that cost $1,200. This is the first Mac I've ever owned and I've had it for a few months. At first I absolutely loved it, all the cool programs I had never used and just how smoothly everything operated. I've downloaded quite a few additional programs and also have put thousands of photos, a few home videos (baseball games), TV shows, music etc. on my unit. Recently while making a end of the season slideshow/video on imovie then using iDVD to burn the video my mac has has an extreme drop in performance. imovie is useless to me as it takes forever to load and if I try and add a new clip audio or video it takes upwards of a minute. Also some time Safari will unexpectedly quit responding. I'm so sick of seeing that little color wheel load thing haha. So id there anything I can do to increase performance? Or have I just maxed out the core duo? If so does anyone now if theres a way to trade up to the 15in? Thanks, sorry for my ignorance.

Sounds like you just filled the hard drive. How much storage have you got left? Do you shut down the computer or sleep it. too much sleep leaves a lot of cache to be binned. so if you don't do a restart every 1 -2 days minimum for best performance.

The closest you could get to trading up would be to just sell it and buy a new one. I would recommend doing a few things:

  • Check that your hard drive isn't full
  • See if you can upgrade the RAM at all
  • Take a compressed can of air and clean out the vents. If you are really comforable with computers, take it apart and give it a really good cleaning, but that probably will void your warranty.

He has the 13" MacBook Pro. Apple started them in June 2009. So he either has a june 2009 version or the new 2010 version. I use the 2009 version and it's good enough to encode and edit 1080P video so.... it's probably something wrong with the drive.

If he checks back and tells us about his hard drive, I would guess it is dying/ full.

If he has the 2010 version, most likely he has 320gb hard drive (if he paid $1200 for it). I will be surprised if he had already used up his hard drive. And the standard memory that comes with this is 4gb.

I always make sure that I have at least 20% available space to keep my laptop running good.

To check HD space of all directories run this command in terminal.app which is located in /Applications/Utilities.

Code:
sudo du -h -x -d1 /

It will ask you for your password, then input your password and let it run. It will take a few moments to run. Then copy/paste the results here.

May you have stored too much data to your hard drive. Making the system over sleeping also can cause the problem of hardware. You have to check out the performance of the fan and also for the RAM storage capacity that can affect the performance of system.
