Machine Shop Super Computer

I'm involoved in the cleaning of computer cables and out of date crap in the corner of a machine shop. This is what i was thinking of since technology make the parts made in the shop more precise and better quality therefore allowing the shop to get better prices for parts and machines.

Keep in mind i don't know if this is possible and i know it would be an expensive venture but i want to see if you guys have any oppinions and or comments. Pleade correct me if im wrong on any of this stuff.

Alright i was thinkin about all these dual proccessor servers im talkin actually haveing 2 chips both being of the dual core variety. Maybe some 939 socket opterons since they can have up i think its 8GB of RAM each correct me if im wrong. One problem i found with this is finding a motherboard that supports that 16GB RAM(8 each) while keeping my pc goal in mind of prolly a geforce 7800 OC that should allow the use of dual moniters of the dvi variety? (I don't fully understand the capibilitys of the dual moniters would I be viewing the same on both?) Also utilizing a tv capture card so it would be possible to run tv through the computer and out the S-vid jack on the vid card to the tv or watch it on the moniter. Also including a high quality sound card with surrond sound. All this while having this system act like a small server for no more than a couple wireless notebooks and milling machine computers. Primimarly running CAD related stuff and 3D graphics including simulation testing now this is why i mentioned the high quality vid card. And use the sound card to send high quality sound around the entire machine shop!

dual monitors will display an extended desktop. It's like having a desktop twice as wide. I don't think you would need 16 GB of ram to do what you're talking about, unless you are running a TON of stuff at the same time.

You can run a tuner card and hook a TV up to the svideo port. Control of the TV would be through the computer. There are some nice free programs out there that will allow your computer to act as a TIVO box (including DVR). As for the notebook server....what would be the function? I would just get a wireless router and have it networked. Audio should be no problem either, but what are you running the sound through? If you plan on running audio out through a digital source of some kind (optical or coax) to a reviecer and plan on playing DD or DTS sources, then avoid Soundblaster cards like the plague. You could run component sound if your reciever supports it tho.

The function with the notebooks would just be used for pulling plans, CAD drawings that kind of thing of that main computer were talkin bout. The reciever for the sound could be anything, im willing to update everything if i go to the expense of dual opterons and project of this size. What would you say is my best soud option in this case?

I'm not sure. I've been looking for something as well. I know yamaha makes good cards that will do all of that and more, but they are pretty $$$

Yeah they are a bit pricey but it might be worth it if your needs constituted that. But, i dont know it defiantly needs more research for me anyway.
