Machine will run Ubuntu but not Windows 7?!

Hey guys, I've looked absolutely everywhere online and have found no solution to this problem and am seeking some expert knowledge that'll hopefully help me resolve this. So here's the issue. I can install and run Ubuntu Linux distro 12.04 LTS (and 13.0X) and run it for months on my machine (Compaq Presario CQ62, 2.2GHz AMD64, 2GB DDR2) with no problems. Now when Windows 7 Ultimate is loaded onto that same machine (clean install, reformatted NTFS drive) it will work for an hour or so after the install, then it decides to freeze up at the "loading windows" screen. When I try the "Startup repair tool" option it does the exact same thing, freezes. I've checked my HDD multiple times and am pretty sure there are no problems with it. I've also tried many different bootable install CDs and USB drives all made on separate computers but the problem still persists. I've just finished my 5th install of Win 7 Ult. and still no luck. Any thoughts on this? :confused:

I had the same issue with Windows on one of my computers when I increased the CPU strength in BIOS.In other words when I attempted to overclock my CPU.That would cause my system to freeze after 30 minutes to an hour.It depends on the system and how lucky you are of course lol.

So what I would try FIRST is:

-Go to BIOS and load OPTIMAL DEFAULTS and then save the changes.The computer should restart automatically.

-Go to BIOS again and return any CPU,VRAM and RAM changes you have made back to their default levels together with any VOLTAGES you may have changed (not all BIOSES have this feature).Save the changes.The computer should restart automatically.

(Other things should already be reverted back to the default considering that you have loaded the OPTIMAL DEFAULTS from the first step).

-Completely erase the entire drive with KILL DISK.

-Install Windows 7.When you get to the PARTITIONS MENU,do NOT create ANY partitions.Just select the UNPARTITIONED SPACE and install on that.Windows setup will automatically create the new NTFS partition as big as it possibly can and then install on that.

Hey STARS thank you for your reply. Well I've wiped the disk completly multiple times before this and installed it exactly the way you've described. I've reverted my BIOS setting but still the problems persists. I'm thinking of maybe swapping the HDD with another and installing a new copy of Windows 7 to see whether it's a hardware or hard disk problem. Any thoughts?
 
So I tried loading the drivers from windows installation and none came up. I tried a new installation with the new HDD and I am still having this problem with the freezing. Anyone else have any thoughts?
 
What about other Windows operating systems such as Windows XP or Windows Vista?
Do you have the same issues with them too or not?

I haven't tried any other Windows OS, I will get a copy of xp as soon as I can. For the record, this machine had ran with Windows 7 for 2-3 years prior to date (came factory installed). The problem just came up recently when I had tried to install Windows 7 after using Ubuntu for some time. I had installed Ubuntu for the first time on this machine maybe 4-5 months ago.

Yes I am currently running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS without any problems at all. When I try installing any copy of Windows 7 I cant use the machine for more than 30 minutes-1 hour after a new install. It just freezes, and when rebooted, wont get past the windows logo that swirls a few seconds after powered on. Same with the windows repair option.

SOLVED. Just ran some diagnostics in BIOS. Got an error code 0x0303 guess it was the hdd after all. I guess the one my buddy sent me was bad also (figures). Got a new HDD and it's working great now, been running for a while with no problems like before. Thanks for the help. But curious how the failed disk runs Ubuntu perfectly huh?

Yea that's interesting lol.
The only thing which comes on my mind is that it worked on Ubuntu since Windows is doing more reading/writing on the HDD during the OS execution/running time.Especially if the pagefile is enabled to it's maximum together with all other Windows options/features.

I guess this is one of the main reasons why so many people use Ubuntu instead of Windows.
