im thinking about getting a new computer and want to buy an i book pro. i dont know much about macOS so i need to know if most windows programs will work on mac.. automatically? or do they need emulation? is it difficult to get win progs running on mac?

thanks

I think windows pc has greater number in market shares and customers compared to mac, thats why more programs run on windows.
and emulating windows programs would just slow it down.

as you can see by my <pic< i really dont like apple/mac. they are good for somethings, but i dont believe that they are more outstanding in any area than a pc in order to justify the extra $.

i think macs are pretty good computers, but you are paying for the brandname. you definitely get a lot more for your money with a PC. and as far as the mac OS being easier to use, that is ANCIENT history. you will have a much easier time using windows for just about everything you need to do imo. some windows programs work with macs, some dont. i know lots of people who own macs and love them, but i get the feeling its really because people who own one feel like they are making a statement

Well, Ive been a pc user for over 12 years now, and I just finally dived into the mac world. If you know me, you would know that I couldn't give a rats arse about making a statement or anything like that. Ive built quite a few pc's and have restored more than i care to count. Anywho...

Just bought a new macbook. Bought the baseline white one. (No sense in paying 200$ for 2gigs of ram, when I can get 2gigs of corsair on Newegg for 85$ and get to keep the 2 x 512 sticks that come with the pc. Same thing on upgrading to the 160 gig hdd for 300$ when newegg has a WD 7200rpm 160gb for 95$. Again get to keep the harddrive that comes with the mac as well. Also you cant return the laptop if you customize it out of the baselines they offer less its DOA).

So, one thing go with the baselines and upgrade yourself. Ram and harddrive are considered user replaceable by apple so no voiding your warrantee less your incompetent and destroy something completely. Its way less money than buying these parts directly from them, and you get to keep the existing parts in the macbook.

I found the macbook to be an excellent value, on the other hand i found the macbook pro to be extremely overpriced for what it had. 1000+ extra dollars for a craptastic gpu and a few extra llittle things that i wouldnt use all that often anywho.

On top of the decent price i felt the macbook was, the apple store gave me an excellent deal. For being a student I got $100 off the price of the notebook. Then they gave me a free printer, and 4gig ipod nano. Printer was 100$ and the ipod was $200. Both were after rebates, but no issues there. I needed a new printer anyways because mine crapped the bed. So they gave me 400$ worth of money off and stuff for me buying the notebook.

Ive bought several notebooks before, and

1. This was actually the least expensive notebook ive purchased, even taking into consideration the extra ram and hdd.

2. The discount and extra stuff was a nice touch. Even with rebates, I couldnt go wrong. Crap, I work for Best Buy, and my employee discount didnt come anywhere close to even just the 100 off for being a student. And My apple accomodation wasnt even close to what they were offering me for being a student. So good deal IMO if you a student anyways.

3. Im getting a really big surgery on my chest next week and when school starts i need something small and light. Atleast compared to my behemoth 17" hp i have currently. At only 5lbs and a 13" notebook, it seemed to be perfect for me.

4. Now, i hated apple computers before. Used several at school when i was younger and I hated them with a passion. I researched this notebook more than i have for any other computer Ive ever built or purchased, and I have to say I love it. And I could care less if it was nasty and looked like poo. I just want something that works for me. Something that gets the job done.

5. You get mac os x, and you can run windows as well via bootcamp or parallels desktop or another equivalent app. Very cool.

Overall a very nice and relatively inexpensive laptop for what you get, especially being a student. To be quite honest I probably never would have bought it if i didnt get some sort of discount.

The only advice I can give is that to go to a mac store near you and grab it and hold it. Play with it. Dont buy something you cant feel and see if you like. You can read others opinions all you want, but to be honest you just have to go and try it out for yourself.

I love mine though, and I probably will not purchase another pc laptop again. I will however keep building pc desktops for sure. Nothing beats the cheap customizable gaming experience of a self built pc desktop...hehe

As my sig says, I have a Macintosh and a PC. Assuming you just mean sticking to Mac OS X(not boot camp) I'd lean pretty strongly towards Windows. Mac OS X is pretty decent, but it does have some problems. This may be related to my older G4, but it always seems sluggish, even compared to similarly spec'ed PCs such as my laptop. Maybe an intel based macintosh would be much faster, I really don't know. It's also much harder to find software for. But of course, it's much harder to get viruses and what not on a Macintosh running OS X...

you hit the nail on the head, bro:D

DEATH TO THE MAC'S!!!! first or secont one i met that has the same feelings about mac! all you pay for is a slim computer that cant run many games or programs. i would go with win/linux. first beacause the programs that run on macs can i believe run on linux.

their sleek, they look great, they run well, if their idling at least, they dont have the guts to do much else, and even if you stick a c2d and 2gb of ram and vs it with a windows based computer, the windows computer will blow it out of the water, and the mac will be left at the starting gate. why? the program didnt work!

what do you want to do on the computer? Cause if you want to play games get windows, if only rarely play games get a mac and dual boot or do virtual windows.

You could have just used the search, there are loads of threads about this

i do play games... mostly counterstrike and warcraft 3 but the main purpose of this laptop is for word processing, surfing the web and sound editing/recording......

i heard somewhere that macs don't get spyware/adware? is this true or not?

They can but it's much more rare than a PC. This is because the FreeBSD kernel that OSX is based on is not commonly used relatively speaking. I'd get a Mac and dual-boot personally.
