Well, Ive been a pc user for over 12 years now, and I just finally dived into the mac world. If you know me, you would know that I couldn't give a rats arse about making a statement or anything like that. Ive built quite a few pc's and have restored more than i care to count. Anywho...
Just bought a new macbook. Bought the baseline white one. (No sense in paying 200$ for 2gigs of ram, when I can get 2gigs of corsair on Newegg for 85$ and get to keep the 2 x 512 sticks that come with the pc. Same thing on upgrading to the 160 gig hdd for 300$ when newegg has a WD 7200rpm 160gb for 95$. Again get to keep the harddrive that comes with the mac as well. Also you cant return the laptop if you customize it out of the baselines they offer less its DOA).
So, one thing go with the baselines and upgrade yourself. Ram and harddrive are considered user replaceable by apple so no voiding your warrantee less your incompetent and destroy something completely. Its way less money than buying these parts directly from them, and you get to keep the existing parts in the macbook.
I found the macbook to be an excellent value, on the other hand i found the macbook pro to be extremely overpriced for what it had. 1000+ extra dollars for a craptastic gpu and a few extra llittle things that i wouldnt use all that often anywho.
On top of the decent price i felt the macbook was, the apple store gave me an excellent deal. For being a student I got $100 off the price of the notebook. Then they gave me a free printer, and 4gig ipod nano. Printer was 100$ and the ipod was $200. Both were after rebates, but no issues there. I needed a new printer anyways because mine crapped the bed. So they gave me 400$ worth of money off and stuff for me buying the notebook.
Ive bought several notebooks before, and
1. This was actually the least expensive notebook ive purchased, even taking into consideration the extra ram and hdd.
2. The discount and extra stuff was a nice touch. Even with rebates, I couldnt go wrong. Crap, I work for Best Buy, and my employee discount didnt come anywhere close to even just the 100 off for being a student. And My apple accomodation wasnt even close to what they were offering me for being a student. So good deal IMO if you a student anyways.
3. Im getting a really big surgery on my chest next week and when school starts i need something small and light. Atleast compared to my behemoth 17" hp i have currently. At only 5lbs and a 13" notebook, it seemed to be perfect for me.
4. Now, i hated apple computers before. Used several at school when i was younger and I hated them with a passion. I researched this notebook more than i have for any other computer Ive ever built or purchased, and I have to say I love it. And I could care less if it was nasty and looked like poo. I just want something that works for me. Something that gets the job done.
5. You get mac os x, and you can run windows as well via bootcamp or parallels desktop or another equivalent app. Very cool.
Overall a very nice and relatively inexpensive laptop for what you get, especially being a student. To be quite honest I probably never would have bought it if i didnt get some sort of discount.
The only advice I can give is that to go to a mac store near you and grab it and hold it. Play with it. Dont buy something you cant feel and see if you like. You can read others opinions all you want, but to be honest you just have to go and try it out for yourself.
I love mine though, and I probably will not purchase another pc laptop again. I will however keep building pc desktops for sure. Nothing beats the cheap customizable gaming experience of a self built pc desktop...hehe
